Well, we are a lot of optimists for this match. Looking in the Match Prediction thread most have gone for 3, or 4 nil. Some would say, half joking, that Saints will be lucky to get nil. With no Danny Ings and with a defence which the fan reviewer in the i newspaper today referred to as having the consistency of a 'melt in the middle' pudding, then the result isn't really in much doubt is it? Football though, is a funny old game and is littered with matches that just haven't run to form. We can hope can't we??

I can't see anything but us being hammered unfortunately. It's gonna be very painful. No creativity with Elyounoussi either. 5/6-0 wouldn't be a shock.

I really wish he had gone for Yoshida's pace at the back. Liverpool don't really pose an aerial threat, they are all about pace and ball to feet so the pedestrian Vestergaard could be in for a bad day at the office. Don't mind all the flak going if I'm wrong

Keep hoping we might scrape a draw but I just read on the Echo site that the last league goal we scored against Liverpool was back in 2016. Sadio Mane. If it is a draw it'll have to be a 0-0 and I can't see that happening. Their pace against our back 3? Well, here's to hoping I'm wrong.

As soon as I saw Vestergaard and Hoedt together at the back I feared the worst. Where is Targett supposed to be playing in that formation?

Only 3 down at HT is probably better than I expected from the master tactician. Another easy profit from the bookies at least. I wonder how many we have to lose by in order for it to increase his chances of the sack? This seasons a write off for me until he goes, so the sooner the better.

The combination of Zonal marking and two static Centre Halves is a recipe for days like this.

Zonal marking, slow defence and no actual striker.
I despise Hughes now.

Whilst I'm certainly not going to be the one to defend Hughes, maybe some ire should be directed at the players too. Hughes is the third manager and he hasn't got anything more out of them. With hindsight, perhaps Puel, whilst boring, realised that the squad was limited and chose the best formation and tactics for them. Clearly the squad hasn't improved that much since.
And if Hughes goes who is going to be any better? We're hardly going to attract a high calibre manager now are we? So it will just be another long shot. Frankly, I think we're stuck with Hughes at least until Xmas.
TBH there is no shame in losing to Liverpool. Especially this season. Just I don't see where the wins are going to come from. The zonal marking needs to go. It's clearly not working. But beyond that, I think this is as good as the squad gets.

This pretty much reflects my feelings this evening, particularly about replacing Hughes. PS. I hate zonal marking.

Well, Hughes could use a bit more imagination. If Long and Austin are all he's prepared to try up front, he can feck right off as far as I'm concerned.
Let's see some of our kids play ffs. I hate being a Saints can at the moment. Its the total lack of passion and imagination ta dis me in. There's no project, no ambition, no fecking fun

Exactly, he picked a team to play for a draw at best. Where were the goals going to come from? Austin came on at the end and finally tested their keeper. That team was playing a pathetic system with no real goal scoring forward. That’s not the players’ fault.
