An article posted today by shirleymush, late of this parish, takes a look at the possible legacy of Ralph Krueger's time at Southampton. Normally I find myself in complete agreement with shirleymush's views, but this time I am not. I do agree that there are a lot of things that Kreuger will not be missed for, not least his incoherent interviews and the drift away from developing players from the Academy, to buying in players to develop, but a fair number of things in the article seem almost like trying to find things to pin on him. There have undoubtably been some very expensive mistakes in the clubs transfer dealings of the last three years, but from my perspective the initial reason for not making more use of the youngsters can clearly be placed at the door of Ronald Koeman, who was almost dismissive of the Academy, particularly during his final season and insisted on buying in players. It is down to the Canadian that this was carried on during the subsequent three managers reigns, resulting in a very bloated squad. The current manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, has succeeded in thinning the playing staff down, with some thirteen players out on loan. Not only that, but Hasenhüttl has developed the players he has, some of whom were considered a waste of money by some Saints fans and given chances to some of the youngsters, such as Yan Valery, Michael Obafemi, Calum Slattery and more recently, Josh Sims. I do however agree with shirleymush that I, like him, am unable to put my finger on exactly what it was that his job entailed. Or, to put it another way - What the feck did the bloke do?

Perhaps that is his greatest success, the ability to get paid a lot for harvesting bluebirds

Oh come on, cheap shots aplenty in there, shall we blame him for Brexit too?
Well....I didn't think legacy was a narrative of time in charge, I thought it was how and what you 'leave' when you go. Whether by luck or by judgement (and probably equal doses of both) the Kruger legacy is one of hope, regained balance and a bit of style back. A decent squad with a few places to fill, some signings working very well indeed, some youngsters coming through adding massively to the balance sheet. Add to that a really happy, stable staff who will miss him, not closing the door and thankful he is off.
Let's judge him on what happens next, the Chinese want to go their own way, this is the first big play by them, be careful what you wish for Shirley....

remember the old addage "(s)he who laid the last straw pays for the camel"
basically once you leave you are to blame for Brexit, the Black Death, VWgate and being on the Grassy Knoll. In reality he was merely the monkey sat on top of the organ (worded that carefully)

The title sounds like a good name for a film or video game... where you have to avoid giant lizards while looking for hidden gold.
