I know there are some very clued up folk on here so any advice on what handsets to go for or what to avoid? Mrs Rags has an HTC Desire which seems to be the dogs danglies but the battery life is a bit poor. I'm not sure I can bring myself to get an Iphone though, everyone I know who has one is a bit of bore about them. I'm so confused.

I have an iPhone and I think it's skills on toast.
I don't have many apps though.

Yep, I run my life on it and the old maxim "there's an app for that" should never be underestimated.
Mine is an old 3G, nowadays you have the choice between the 3GS and the 4. I am thinking of changing mine and I am increasingly thinking in terms of a 3GS on Pay As You Go. There are apps that allow you to send free texts and apps that allow you to make free calls. If a contract is your thing, then there is plenty of choice on the iPhone 4. The 3 network is looking very competitive just now and reception on my 3 3G modem is excellent everywhere I have tried it.

I'm still using a Blackberry and, being a bit of a dinosaur, use it for making phone calls. And texts. And very occasionally I use it either as an alarm clock or a camera. That's about it really. (Who'da thunk this man used to run a submarine-full of hi-tech stuff) But it does all those things more than adequately - and due to its sparing use the battery lasts me days between charges.
But I do seem to be surrounded by lots of people with iphones - Ms StB is more than happy with hers but also she is the only one I know never to have broken hers. Are they more prone to breakage or do I just know a lot of clumsy people?
I do hear good things about HTS.

iPhone 4 is mustard after my old 3G which I eventually lost. Neither of mine has broken but then I use them as tools and not as toys. Like Tone all my stuff is synched up totally hassle free.
If you don't go the iPhone route, I would go Android and you can do all the same synching via a google account (gmail), which my daughter does and I would seriously consider if I were not locked into the Apple eco system.

Until I dropped it, My Samsung Wave wasn't a bad option - it didn't have all the fancy apps that the iPhone had, but it did tinterweb and email synching alright - the Andriod version is probably better tho, which is the Galaxy S (but I was too pikey to buy that one)

I have a nice recipe app called Epicurean, Jezza. When I go shopping and see a piece of fish that looks good I can check recipes and get ideas of what to do with it!!

Handy...but I won't be tempted onto the iPhone now, I haven't got any money. And I'm might p'd off with Apple at the mo, what with my Pod being broken* and them trying to charge me to fix it...  *esp with all the new music I've just acquired that I now can only listen to on the PC, gdamit!  |

I'm thinking about getting a smartphone but reading the customer feedback on Amazon makes it looik a minefield.
Most of the stuff praising every model is written by geeks who loaded this and resized that. Similarly some punters have had bad experiences with every model. Isn't there one that works when you want it to and needs no frigging about with?
I'm not minded to go iPhone as I don't trust Apple. Of the rest I'm leaning towards the Samsung Jehram was talking about but am not convinced you can get it to work by pressing the ON button.

I'm an iPhone convert. I've had my 3G for a couple of years now and it's starting to look a bit jaded but that's because I'm always on it. It's really easy to use and when it goes to heaven I'm going to get an iPhone 4 on a contract.

Battery life IS poor, BUT, for a small cost, you can buy better batteries from the 'Net and a charger that not only charges your phone, but spare battery at the same time!! I love it, love it, love it!! |

HTC's synchronisation software is crap. Basically it doesn't work at all on my new Windows 7 laptop although it was OK with Vista. Judging by a bit of googling it is a widespread problem.
That is exactly the sort of thing that puts me off spunking £300+ on something I'm not confident will do what it says on the box. FFS!
