Oh Chelsea! You let football down tonight......... They will compound their folly if they go and beat Watford on Saturday. My heart sank last night when Yarmolenko came off the bench. He is one of my favourite wingers and has always had a goal in him. Gary N summed up who was to blame by showing Alonso jogging back like a Sunday league player while his man was sitting Rudiger on his arse to score the winner. What I hated more than the result was the piss poor commentary. Both the guy on the mike and G Nev spent most of the game bitching about VAR. FFS, we know that VAR is being used, we know how it works and we know how the laws are interpreted. VAR correctly gave Antonio offside when West Ham got the ball in the net yet we had to put up with the KUNTZ rambling on about the injustice of it all. The game has moved on FFS, we don't need to suffer your bullshit opinions just cos you disagree with rule changes. PLEASE STFU!!

In no way can football be said to be improved by chalking off goals that appear a millimetre off-side when drawn by an arbitrary line in Uxbridge. You say correctly given off-side but that's not definitely the case. It's already been proved that the cameras used in VAR are so piss-poor in terms of frame rate that there is a margin of error far larger than than the margin that goals are being disallowed for so it is madness to keep using VAR as a matter of fact in these cases. The important phrase of clear and obvious should be used to cover this failing in the technology. I did also like GNev's moaning about the Summer drinks breaks in a game played in 13 degree conditions. I was thinking the players could do more with a hot chocolate than cold water.

Oh Chelsea! You let football down tonight......... More annoyingly, Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle all won which makes our chances of making any upward progress a lot slimmer.

How on earth can anyone sane person justify taking away a goal when the tech cannot prove that the player actually was off-side? It's just (a lack of) common sense.

I think it funny that people are still moaning about VAR and Summer drinks breaks, when there are far more important things to worry about. I suppose that is symptomatic of the inward looking nature of football.
When the whole of football is under threat from the economic reality, it is time to just accept that it is what it is and just move on.

Of course goals being incorrectly is important. Saying there are more important things in the covid world is a bit trite. Of course there are more important things than sport, there always are, but it is a welcome distraction! Football isn't under threat Channers. You need to stop thinking that. What is under threat is the future of holding companies which own football clubs which I won't be losing any sleep over.

People are allowed to moan about Saints not playing very well against Arsenal, but not about VAR? Why?
Funny thing is, I watched a lot of nostalgia based football during the break, stuff like the FA Cup and World Cup Rewind shows the BBC put out and when there were strange or clearly wrong calls, I sometimes found myself going against my better judgement and starting to think that VAR wasn't so bad and actually is quite useful. One thing that really struck me is that contrary to what you often hear, refs are not worse than in the old days. In fact they used to make completely bizarre decisions sometimes where you couldn't even tell what was going on in their heads, but I digress.
So all of that starts to change my mind, and then you get something like this. I've seen the decision itself which I don't think is right (on the basis of Antonio interfering with play, never mind the accuracy of drawn lines and frame rates), but didn't watch it in real time but notice that it took 3 minutes to get overturned. It's the extreme delay that is the big problem for me. So I'm back to not liking it again.

It was noticeable last night that when the same West Ham player who had the goal chalked off scored a goal a few mins later, he didn't even bother to celebrate, he just looked around as if to say 'I assume you are going to disallow that one as well'. We may as well go back to my 'PL Factor' suggestion of a while back. We can just play all the games without VAR and goals are scored but not celebrated by fans or players. Then there is a big Saturday Night ITV programme where a celebrity panel decide on which goals are given and which are ruled out. They could have an internet vote as well.

Anyway, at the bottom, as I said earlier in the thread, West Ham have enough players who can turn it on every so often and get the odd win and that's what happened. And 3 points is worth a lot more than usual now as the rest just seem unable to pick up anything. Bournemouth have completely collapsed and have a nightmare run-in, they look dead and buried. At the start of the season you'd have to say that their squad was the strongest it's ever been. Howe has to take some blame for this collapse but he seems immune to criticism. I think it's a case that like a lot of managers, they have a limited shelf life in one place and his is gone, at least in terms of making this squad effective in the PL. Oddly, I think if they had scraped survival it could have been best for them for him to move on, but also that he's probably the best man for them to try to get promoted again. We've mentioned before that they have a number of decent players who will come back to the PL, so he'll have to refresh the squad and is probably quite good at that.
Villa and Watford, not much between them. I think Pearson is more likely to be able to grind out the points that they need. The Norwich game next week is vital for Watford. My prediction: win that and they will stay up on 33 points!

I feel like relegation is settled to be honest. The three in there will go. And with the title decided the only teams with any focus are those chasing European places, like us 😂

It's going to be really tight in the positions from 10th-14th. It will be vitally important to try to get up as high as we can given how poor our financial position is. With almost £2m per position this could be the difference between us being able to sign a player or not.

It looks like what we're fighting for now is whether we can gain an additional £8-10m... in other words a defender of similar quality to Hoedt... it's really not that inspiring is it
