Win is a win. In this heat even professional footballers will wilt a tad. I was at the Euro 96 game v Scotland at Wembley. We were sat next to a few thousand Scots. Gascoigne's goal was a thing of beauty. Friday at 8pm will be a cooler temperature and a livelier atmosphere. That's for certain.

I thought it was a very professional performance. Croatia are decent, we made them look ordinary without really getting into the high gears ourselves. The group stages are about qualifying and that result should see us top the group. After that it's a bit more tricky

nairnsaint England V Scotland-Next Friday. How about your thoughts ? I think we'll go hard and fast for first 15, try and grab a goal then shut up shop. If England ride that 15 mins out without conceding there's no way we'll get anything out of it.

What was that about Sterling then?!
The one that surprised me was Kane, he was all but anonymous.

What was that about Sterling then?! The one that surprised me was Kane, he was all but anonymous. Kane did struggle, yes. The one when he banged into the post I thought he'd score that. But he will still be a key player. He does drop deep a lot generally but did so a lot more yesterday it seemed to me. This is why England will always start with a pacy wide player like Sterling, you have to have either him or Sancho on there to offer that threat behind or teams will just let England play in front of them. It will generally be one of Sterling or Sancho, with one of Grealish or Foden either side of Kane. We won't often see Grealish and Foden together on the pitch, especially now that Mount seems to be an important cog. Trippier was a bit more of a strange one, obviously his set pieces are important and he did as well as he could I thought considering he is right footed, but it seemed more like a player filling in when you have no other options which isn't the case. Overall I thought we were good. It's ridiculous to think we can completely outplay a side as technically proficient as Croatia and when the game slowed in pace things suited them, Modric was still heavily involved. But they didn't create any good chances really, while we had 3 or 4 across 90 minutes. England are often criticised for not being able to beat the first decent team we face in tournaments, well we just faced a decent team and beat them. It might not lead anywhere, but it's a good start.

We are going to waste some serious attacking talent in this tournament and Southgate will be to blame. He is weak and in love with the star players in his squad, pandering to their every need. So much so that we are going into a tournament: 1) With at least two players who are clearly not and nowhere near fit. I can just about accept Henderson as he is fully taking part, but picking Maguire when he wont be fit for any of the group games is ridiculous. It is undermining the others picked who all look shot. Play well Tyrone, and I'll drop you as soon as my favourite is back. 2) Doesn't know his best keeper 3) Gives 8 days off to Chelsea and City players rather than ask them to play 45 minutes in a 'best side' to protect their 'emotions' 4) Final warm up game, gives all set pieces to someone he has no intention of picking, even states he was on Pens..... 5) No idea on final formation 6) Makes Rashford captain when he doesn't even deserve to be in the side 7) and who the feck wheres a blue terry-cloth Polo shirt under a grey suit, with the top button done up FFS.....Who the hell does he think he is? But he got to a semi final in his first world cup and now has beaten the runners up at that WC in the Euros, the first time we have won the opening game at that tournament in ten attempts. Sorry, but I'm not yet jumping on the Pards for England band-wagon.

Croatia may not be the side of a couple of years back, but they've still got enough to do damage if allowed. Indeed, after England blew themselves out in the Saints-like first 20 I thought it was likely that the result would be similarly Saints-like, but we were lucky to score just as it was looking like Croatia were starting to turn the screw. Still have to question the selection, can't say Trippier's free kicks were good enough to warrant dropping a couple of perfectly serviceable left backs to shoehorn him in.. that decision makes leaving JWP behind all the more baffling. Having said that, Philips performance went some way towards justifying it.
