Before we go on (yet) another rant against the Government, can we look at a few facts. Personally, we spent the best part of year indoors without going out at all so are understandably a bit concerned about the impending end of the mask mandate and social distancing. However, it's important to remember a few things. Firstly, Covid seems a virus that splits into two, to the young and healthy it is such an inconsequential thing that a high % of those infected will not even know they are, but to the other half, the elderly and vulnerable it is a virtual death sentence. We are now in the position that all of the elderly and vulnerable have been double jabbed and even though the vaccine is not 100% efficient this is a huge thing. Amongst all the tin-foil stuff on MLT's twitter I did notice one thing that made sense. It was him quoting a thread of a person re-tweeting a post from the beginning of March and saying the comments haven't aged well. The post was from the Governor of Texas saying the mask mandate has ended and all business are now fully open with no social distancing. The replies were all the same as we are seeing now, the virus will take hold again, deaths will sore and we will all be locked down once again. But what has happened in Texas in the 6 months since then? None of this. As Orde confirmed first hand, hospitalisations from Covid are very low as is the death rate. I can't see why things should be any different here. It's not deaths that is the problem, it's all the other respiratory things that it triggers. One of my colleagues daughter is a GP and she caught it in February last year and only now is able to manage the stairs in her home. People are thinking about this in way to simplistic terms, it's way, way more complicated than that. just look at what is starting to happen in A&E departments now. We may be lucky, we may not, but the Government is gambling. no other way to describe it. My 22 year old granddaughter has caught Covid in spite of being double jabbed as she is a Social Worker. A friend of mine a gynaecologist in Leeds aged 36 is suffering with Long Covid both are in a very poor state. My doctor friend has been hospitalised with the disease and is suffering badly. So anyone who insists that Covid is a nothing illness simply do not know what they are talking about. It is a very nasty debilitating disease that you simply do not want to catch.
