Test drove a Tesla this weekend. My oldest will be getting his license soon and it will simplify things immensely if he can take himself to school, so we will need to add a car soon. I’m putting between 60 miles a day on my car so I really need start looking at electric vehicles. It would be $6 vs $60 per tank of gas equivalent.
Anyway, the Tesla is an odd experience. There’s nothing in the cockpit but an iPad, so it doesn’t feel like normal driving. It’s like driving a really powerful golf cart. I mean really powerful, 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds, but as soon as you let your foot off the accelerator it starts slowing down like a golf cart. It doesn’t coast. I feel like with the rapid acceleration/deceleration it has a good chance of making passengers a bit carsick until Id learn to control it better.
After that I test drove a bmw on my wife’s urging, which was the other end of the spectrum. An endless number of gadgets in the cockpit to play with. I’ve always been more utilitarian when it comes to cars but I can definitely see the appeal.

The 'non coasting' bit sounds a bit strange/dangerous - a recipe for getting hit from behind? Another weird thing about the Tesla is that they do your service remotely. On an i pad. But if anything is physically wrong I suppose you still have to drive it somewhere to get it fixed.
I'm going to wait until the eye-watering prices come down a bit and there are enough charging spots to be comfortable on long journeys.

Monday's are great. Had a day trip to Bognor Regis as B will be going to Chichester Uni's campus there, and we also had a walk on the beach, played crazy golf and enjoyed ourselves. Not working is ace.

I have had an interesting day. Picked up a new pair of hearing aids (too much loud music in my teenage/twenty years), which are fantastically better than the NHS free ones I had before. They are also fantastically expensive. The neat thing is they have rechargeable batteries and bluetooth, so I can take phone calls on them, as they are paired with my phone. I can also watch streaming stuff on my phone and the sound is sent to them. Neat. The big test will come on Sunday at football, I can switch to a focus mode and tone down noise around me (The football ignorant lot behind us - if they have renewed) and focus on speech from those immediately in front of me.
While I was out I popped into Waterstones and bought a beautiful book on the artist Hans Holbein the Younger. Ticks nearly all the boxes - Art, History, Books, but it was probably expecting a bit much to find anything about Saints in there...
Oh yes, and is there the slightest plausible excuse from the western politicians for the abject shambles that is the collapse into medieval life of Afghanistan? "It's not Saigon" I heard some American politician say. I am sorry mate, that's exactly what it bloody well is. I hope those useless sons of bitches can sleep at night. All the people who have served there to give the population some hope, have just had their sacrifices made absolutely bloody pointless. Fecking disgusting. Trump, Biden, Johnson, et al, hang your miserable heads in shame.

The biggest issue was us deciding to invade another country in the first place. As we've seen with Libya and Iraq it never ends well when the West decides which form of leadership is best for a Middle East country. Just let the feckers get on with it. With the Taliban getting ever stronger it would have taken a massive effort from Western nations to stop them for any decent length of time. Just how many more British soldier's lives is it worth to try and stop them?

What you are saying is not wrong, but that doesn't alter the absolute cluster-feck that the current incumbents have made of the withdrawal. Normally I generally support Biden, if not Johnson, but in this case he has made a calamitous error of judgement. This is far worse than the downfall of South Vietnam, with probably far more long-reaching and damaging consequences.

Obviously the exit strategy has been a feck up and all countries should have got their personnel out of the country weeks if not months ago but once everyone is out what are the long reaching and damaging consequences of this exit strategy. Barring a massive military effort costing tens if not thousands of lives of Western soldiers the Taliban were always going to regain control of Afghanistan so, given there is no appetite from any Western country for another war, then what other solution is there?

Was talking about the solar panels with my wife last night. Have to get that priced get batteries as well, it's well worth the extra cost. Otherwise you can only get power in the daylight. We have a battery in our house in a very not sunny part of the world and in the summer months we don't pay for electricity till about 1030 at night(in the rest of the year to be fair, we probably don't start using grid electricity until 730 at night unless somebody turns on something with a massive draw like tumble dryer or iron or something). If you get a big enough battery you can be pretty self-sufficient to be honest. Obviously the car will be a bigger draw but Living where you live, it's a no-brainer as far as I can tell

The very fact that we went to Afghanistan in the first place was madness, when Russia couldn't do anything of note and also made a hasty retreat you knew that we were on a hiding to nothing. In conclusion , dont stick your nose into other countries business unless absolutely necessary.

Afghanistan has repelled everyone from Alexander the Great onwards.
We don't understand the dynamics of tribal societies and trying to impose "western democracy" in the middle east has NEVER worked yet and probably never will.
