haven't watched an England game for ages, that was dire (not Eric)
Honestly, Southgate is crap… He keeps picking England players who aren't playing… It doesn't matter if they're better than the ones that are playing, they just don't have the sharpness necessary.
Maguire is a case in point
As for the tactics, it's like England are being managed by Ralph, back 3 obsession, when they don't play well like that with the personnel they have.
Italy are not really as good as they looked against England today, that was embarrassing for England… Doubly so for the manager… Oh well, at least the players get a nice Middle Eastern holiday for free (actually, I think they get paid for it…)

I didn’t watch the game. I saw the team selection and decided to watch a bunch of people I’d never heard of on Strictly with 299. It was obviously the right choice.
The difference between Ralph and Southgate is that Ralph has spent 3 years trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, whereas Southgate has the pick of the crop available and still fecks it all up. He is utterly inept. His favouritism towards players is unfathomable - Maguire, Sterling (good sometimes, but never substituted, even when playing terribly). I’m sure he’ll shake things up against the Germans by bringing back Mason Mount. His obsession with right backs is absurd. The back 3 formation that puts the handbrake on and sucks the joy out of games is bizarre. His inability to stop Kane from dropping deep shows tactical nativity, weak leadership or both. There is simply no plan and no creativity.
He is a nice guy, but was an average player, a shit club manager and is a shit international manager too. He was in the right place at the right time and brought respectability back when Fat Sam had brought shame, but he’s dragging the team down. England’s Solskjaer. Yes, England have reached the latter stages of tournaments under his stewardship… we’ve argued this one out before. We could be real contenders under a decent manager, but will be also-rans at the WC.
Really hope someone brings up this post at Christmas to make me look and feel stupid, but that’s not going to happen, is it?

Wot 300 said, apart from Strictly ( we watched the finale of Stranger Things instead, which was very entertaining).

Strictly, Stranger Things, Antiques Roadshow, Terry and June re-runs, the Test Card… all better choices.

I thought the whole place was (these days) one massive shit hole. I'd be far happier with a relaxing fortnight in the Donbas even if it meant voting for Putin at gunpoint.

What would be the ideal team for England? I wouldn’t pick much players from last night’s team in the Netherlands starting 11. And I don’t really rate this Netherlands team.

Relegation signed, sealed, delivered. But carry on Gareth, keep picking the same old bores and keep playing right wingers at left back. Bullshit! That was mostly Italy's second string FFS!

My team would be: Henderson or Ramsdale Trent Stones Tomori Chilwell JWP Rice Bellingham Foden Grealish Kane Line ‘em up like that and tell Kane not to drop deep. Sancho and Sterling in reserve, if it needs changing up. I don’t have a vendetta against Sterling and don’t mind him starting in place of Grealish. He can be very good indeed - the problem is that he can also be crap, but Southgate will never pull him off (ooh er.. 😐)

Ok - not really my place to comment as I didn’t watch the game, but everything I’ve read suggests England were terrible.
Southgate’s view is quite telling. From the Beeb:
“Gareth Southgate says England's performance in their defeat by Italy was "a step in the right direction" despite the Three Lions being relegated to the Nations League's second tier.
England are without victory in five games for the first time since June 2014 following the 1-0 loss in Milan.
They have also failed to score a goal from open play in 495 minutes.
"It's difficult for me to be too critical of the performance," said England manager Southgate.”

Kane needs to know there are alternatives to him hogging the ball and shooting badly instead of passing.

Last night he could have slipped it to Foden on the edge of the area but blasted over and then when he had a chance he blasted it straight at Donnarumma, the ball came straight back to him and he blasted it straight at Donnarumma AGAIN! It was funny when he got that smack in the mouth though.
