Morning
I see I missed a six goal thriller last night. Never mind.
I'm depressed about the economy. Our mortgage is due for renewable in the new year and we're trying to organise a rate now but want to do some extension work to the house and getting builders to quote is a nightmare so we don't know, if we need to borrow more than the mortgage (we have some savings) or how much - might mean the work will have to wait, which is annoying.
This will sound very smug in the current climate, but it's really not supposed to. It's supposed to highlight how rubbish the economy is right now. When we initially spoke to our current lender about borrowing for our next term we were told we would only be able to borrow 2.5 times my salary because my wife went self employed during the pandemic and doesn't have two full years of accounts at the moment. 2.5 times my salary would just about cover the cost of my current house when I bought it 11 years ago - assuming I have the same level of deposit I had then. Since then the house has gone up in value by around two thirds on top of what we paid for it. I am very lucky at the moment and I'm currently in the top 5% of earners in the country. HOW THE feck would anyone looking to get on the ladder today cope? I live in a modest 3 bed semi in Southampton and yet if I was on my own I wouldn't be able to buy it today based on that assessment. We've since had further discussions with other lenders and we don't have the issue but it is worrying for anyone looking to start out now.
Anyway, enough of that depressing shite... How about a film review?
Saw Don't Worry Darling last night - I'm afraid I was right about the state of the film industry, it's not in good shape. This is a high quality cast - Florence Pugh is a massive talent, you've got Capt. Kirk himself Chris Pine and it's directed by Olivia Wilde who did the refreshingly fun Booksmart a few years ago. The film looks incredible, production is amazing, but once you get past a couple of stellar acting performances and some nice scenery it's really bad. It's supposed to be a comment on sexism and feminism but it's so out of date that it's irrelevant now. It's got a few interesting characters whose stories should have been explored much more but it focuses on one couple only, despite that it's overlong. It has plot holes coming out of its arse and the big reveal is the most anti-climatic it could be (not too far short of 'it was all a dream' FFS! - It's not that though) and they drag it out beyond the big reveal for about 30 minutes with some stuff that then just doesn't make sense.
Damn I'm depressed about the economy and the film industry!

I think part of the issue has been that Hollywood thought that the future was TV series/streaming and that big films were dead. I suspect the switch off from Netflix caught them by surprise & now they just don't know what to do. The end result is both disciplines are suffering.

All movies should be 90 mins.

Yeah, we had a similar conversation the other day on here (I think during your sick leave) about how streaming has killed decent film making. Now it's all about BIG name, glossy poster and get it on streaming as soon as possible. Storytelling is dead. Just dull dull films made to attract attention on a scroll through a list

Florence Pugh doesn’t do much for me but a young(er) Alison Brie in Community gives me the vapours. In Glow it’s more Betty Gilpin in a leotard (or out of one, I’m not fussy).
FYI Gillian Jacobs is very scantily clad at the beginning of season 3, episode 4 (I think) and that’s worth the Netflix fee on its own. It makes up for Joel McHale taking his top off all the time.
The global economy is buggered but the UK economy is even worse. I can’t think (it’s a combination of Brexit and Tories IMHO) why that might be.
We’re in the process of selling our modest semi in the UK. I’d rather have money in the bank at the moment (although I don’t know how much spending power there’ll be in Sterling if this shorting the currency scam is allowed to play out - yep, that’ll be the Tories again).
You’d be welcome to join the Euro - I saw Mme Lagarde arriving at work this morning so I’ll put in a good word for you.

If you can get it done quick it might be a good time to sell, before the Govt follow through the next step in their plan of tanking the housing market so foreign investors can buy up swathes of housing to rent to everyone who's going to default on their mortgages. Not sure I've come across Pugh (as it were)

Afternoon all,
I eschewed the football last night but did check occasionally. I was amused to see Southgate's dullness selection rewarded by being 2 down but quite surprised they managed to salvage a point (albeit pointless in the nations league scheme of things).
Speaking of football, I'm trying to see if I can get tix for the City game as I can't cancel my flights to Manchester which were booked for the now cancelled (due to rail strike) stag do up there... looks fairly booked up, but maybe there'll be some spares going due to the aforementioned strike. Not sure I really want to go to the game as it'll probably be a massacre, but it's a day out, I guess.
Agree, it's hard to find a decent film to watch nowadays; streaming's partly to blame, but also the endless guffing out of superhero movies.. I didn't mind the odd one at first, but they seriously need to move on from that trope now. Speaking of streaming, having "completed" Stranger Things, we've now moved on to Titsndragons (saving the LOTR one till there's a full run to watch), which is alright in my book; ok, it's a bit of a slow start, but you've got to expect a bit of introductory place setting.

afternoon all
I was about to wax lyrical on the film industry when Jerry (Frank) said it all, don't get me wrong, I loved it when the superheroes movies started but they've done all the good ones and it's desperate shit now (and has been for quite a while), they may pick up on some great underground stuff (but probably won't) but they just need to get down to actually making movies that tell a story now and not about people with "powers" any fecking more.
I mean he's a big cock but does anybody remember Reservoir dogs (even though it was a massive rip-off of 15 minutes in a Hong Kong movie) and the ensuing decade of reallly interesting movies that were created as a result of it? What about Trainspotting? What about obscure little indie flicks from the other side of the world like "once were Warriors" … Why is nobody telling really good stories with really good acting any more?
Rant rant rant mutter mutter…
(PS, Yates, get fecking shot ASAP and for Fox sake do not send it to your Euro account! then, when Thick Lizzie has really ground us into bits of jelly, buy somewhere cheap to rent out as a landlord (Leeds is a good bet) just so you've got some property on the ladder here that you can sell if you ever get crazy enough to want to come back to this fecking country)

There's still some great stuff being made in that space though. The real issue is with the mainstream stuff and that is that they're not in the market to sell out picture houses anymore, so they blow budget on the stuff that gets them picked up by streaming services (a famous face) and ignore things like writing or directing. When they had to sell out cinemas word of mouth was important, now it's not so much because ultimately at home no one is really paying attention. As to the likes of Tarrantino and Boyle - the trouble is, they got big names and so they then have to start towing the line or they get so up their arse they churn out absolute shite because they think they're a genius and no one is prepared to tell them to wind it in. As much as I don't really agree with SF73's comment that ALL films should be 90 min. Resevoir Dogs and Trainspotting are great examples of where that works and the Hateful Eight is a prime example of why QT should have fecking stuck to that rule!

Had to go into the office this morning. It was horrible. It's ok though, I'm home now, and hoping the rain stops by 5 so I can take the dog out.
