We’ve conceded 12 goals from 20 shots on target. XG the feck out of that. Useless. Embarrassing. After being worst save % in Premier League, in history by the way. He is now worst in Championship after 4 games.

One thing I find when making notes for Match Reports is the number of times I write "shot blocked" when we are attacking but hardly ever when we defend. It has been the same for a few seasons now and until we get defenders who do the f***ing job properly we will continue to let in too many goals. Blaming Baz for the whole team's inability to make a decent defensive contribution is complete bollox. Grow up FFS! Mate, you are missing my point. Of course we can look at other areas, you are completely correct. But looking at the singular ranking of our keepers ability I’m stating we had the worst keeper in the Prem and so far the worst keeper in the Championship.

As I said in the match day chat room Kasper Schmeichel is a free agent, wouldn’t be a bad option for a season, I’m guessing you can sign free agents at any time?

There is a great keeper in there, and a shocking defence in front of him, I genuinely feel sorry for him knowing he will get such pathetic protection week in week out, and then the majority on here slaughter the lad for his xG FFS - he’s doing his best, he’s not throwing the ball in on purpose, give him a fecking break FFS - just imagine, for one moment, he was your 19 year old son - would you slag him as much?? Take a breath and calm the feck down, he wears the shirt, so support him 😇

Again, point missed. He is not my 19 YO son. He is a key player in my football team. He shouldn’t be wearing the shirt again, missing my point by a fecking mile. We are not a crèche for wannabe footballers.

I think it's unlikely that Kasper Schmeichel is wanting to come to us, and he may bide his time for options elsewhere.
We are going to be a stern test for any GK coming to us because of the ball-playing requirement and the current porous nature of our defence / midfield combo. Of the goalkeepers who would have been willing to sign for us this summer, I'm sure we could have got older than a 19 year-old, but would they have been much better and able to pass it around? A deus ex-machina would be nice, but realistically now the window is shut, we have a choice between putting an arm around the lad or roasting him. The real problem here is we couldn't shift McCarthy and that affects competition if we do want him to take a step back and then force his way back into the team in training, as should naturally happen for any position in the team.
For me, the XG numbers tell the fact that when we lose possession, there are often direct paths to really dangerous areas. It's too open. What the manager has to take responsibility for and work on now we have a settled group of (many) new players, is how to a) alter the balance between being so cavalier in our positioning and the actual reward we stand to gain from doing so, b) building up the positional awareness of the players to make us better at handling when a team turns us over near the half-way line.
I fully expect Bazunu to start every game until the next transfer window opens. On that basis we can shout from the sidelines whatever we think is going to help our match results during that time. We have to improve how we are in transition in the 50-60 yards of the pitch above him. For his sake and ours, we should play with a little more caution if we think we're up against a Norwich or Sunderland with counter attacking ability.

Having watched the game again. The defence in front of him is shockingly all over the place, no matter who went in goal yesterday we would have still lost heavily

There are so many things wrong with the team in that performance yesterday that to pick on just the keeper is just plain wrong. I saw an interview with one of the Sunderland players and he said that Mowbray had identified the way Saints played very narrow at the back left large areas to play into. So, that is what they did over and over again. We did nothing to change that dynamic. They thought it was Christmas.
Oh, and their 5th goal was scored by a 16-year-old, FFS!

And I repeat. That is not my point.
This is a singular point about our goalkeeper and nothing and nobody else. Backed by statistics over 1 season and 5 games in the second season. These statistics suggests that he should be nowhere near our team. Nowhere near.
To go up we need to concede at the rate of 1 goal per shots on target. We currently concede 1 in two shots on target. Replace. Now
It is no different that continuing to support a striker who gets in loads of great positions and scores a goal every 20 games. Fact

He was shit today. As was everyone, what was frustrating was he made a couple of decent saves at 4-0. Why can't he do that at 0-0 or 0-1 Yes, TBF to the guy I was thinking in the second half that he was doing a good job of keeping it down to 4-0! Then he got a hand to that child’s powder puff of a header late on and still couldn’t keep it out. Maybe he’s got weak wrists as well as not being a physical entity? Russell Martin is welcome to stick by his first choice but it’s going to end up costing him his job and I’m here for it because it will mean that we get rid of both of them at the same time. Bazunu is an awful keeper and RM can’t set a team up to defend to save his life. You can’t play like Barcelona or Man City unless you’ve got players as good as theirs. Sunderland played very well but we made it too easy. It’s like we’d done nothing all week since scraping past QPR.

That's fine, we can't agree on everything. I have a mate who still insists Tadic is shit. I still think Mane is shit.

The match resport will say Baz stopped it from being embarassing. Holgate was directly responsible for 2 goals and Downes turning an off target shot into his net didn't help either. The ref had a shocker too - not that he affected the result too much. P.S. Martin out! That would be incorrect...unless it was changed to more embarrassing 😉 Very unimpressed by Holgate and Downes on this showing too....and the manager. Yeah, the Everton reject and the West Ham reject were completely non-existent yesterday. It’s easy to play sideways passes when you’re a goal up against QPR but yesterday they and everyone else completely caved in and it was really embarrassing to witness. We were playing Sunderland BTW.

I know the whole team was terrible and Martin was completely outthought by Mowbray (to the extent that any faith I had in him has completely evaporated now) but if a defender fails to block a shot it doesn’t result in a goal conceded as often as it does when a keeper fails to block a shot (as Bazunu does at least once per game).
We conceded in the first minute yesterday seconds after we’d been attacking down the other end. We were easily caught on the break (through no fault of Bazunu’s) and conceded the first and second shots on target (which were both Bazunu’s fault).
A decent keeper would prevent more goals and keep Saints in more games. Defenders need keepers who’ve got their back if they make a mistake. The last line of defence is crucial for minimizing the impact of errors in other areas of the pitch. It’s more important than any other position except striker.
I don’t know if Bazunu’s problems are physical (he doesn’t seem comfortable diving, which is a slight drawback for a keeper) or mental (he only seems to relax and play well after he’s made errors) but playing him is doing more harm than good - to him and the team. After the third goal went in you can see the other players questioning him. It doesn’t matter what I think but it does matter what they think and they have no faith in him either.
It’s not his fault that he keeps getting picked (presumably on the basis that at some point he’ll come good and justify his signing and selection) but Saints had all summer to find a new number one to challenge Baz and they just signed a journeyman who was relegated last season with Reading. Honestly, Sport Republic haven’t got a Scooby about how to run one football club, never mind several.
