Really surprised how much I enjoyed that. My mate is a fan of Sleaford Mods… his taste in music is generally terrible, so I’ve not listened to them before. Great choice, THE BEAST. My musical education continues. it is a great track, I think they complement each other wonderfully actually. It's interesting to note that TSM seem to be doing more collaborations with females, it really works for them. I wouldn't give them a listen to all at once, just pick tracks every now and then. There are some really great ones on various albums. "Fizzy" & "Mcflurry" are some of the more well-known ones but there are lots of others that are great..

today's track is a little cheat on my part, it contains 2 of my current favourites featuring on the one track, although one of them only has a bit part. I find my inner autistic person (not really autistic) does appreciate a little bit of repetitive electronic beats, no one does this better than the Sleaford Mods, mixed with their uniquely poetic and acerbic view of modern life, people & politics it's quite a compelling mix for me. I can't listen to them exclusively but I do like their tracks sprinkled throughout my playlists as it really changes things and I find it refreshes my mind no matter what the track that came before or after it. this track also features Amy Taylor from "Amyl and the Sniffers", one of Australia's best and most energetic and vitriolic punk bands at the moment (I don't know if Tone would describe them as punk, but I do?) I really wanted to feature one of their tracks, but in this first week I am already at sixes and sevens trying to squeeze in everything I would like to play and I'm just not going to have the space. Luckily, on this track "Nudge It" she has a guest vocal spot towards the end of the song (so please stick around for it even if you don't like Sleaford Mods) and I think actually really improves the whole dynamic of the song, and indeed gives the Sleaford Mods themselves a less cliquey and male dominated vibe. As always, as is my thing, please listen to the lyrics. They are repetitive, but I think of them as more like "vocal hammer blows", sometimes you just need to say things again and again to hammer them home. Let me know what you think of this, and look up Amyl and the Sniffers, I will definitely be including them in future weeks. I like this, and have the album it’s on. I don’t know if you’ll be surprised to hear that I like Sleaford Mods more than I like Amyl & The Sniffers (I guess they’re punk, being on Rough Trade just about qualifies them in my mind). actually I am surprised about that But that is a great album, they got a couple of other good ones if you're looking for tips?

FWIW I like Amyl and the Sniffers* more than I like Sleaford Mods.
*Don’t know why I got their name wrong as I’ve got a couple of their albums on CD. I blame tiredness, stress and Animal Nitrate being my favourite Suede song.

for today's little ditty I have no real anecdotes to regale you with… Except this one maybe. I wanted my first selection to include some rap music, I've been listening to rap music since it first came about, I remember having discussions in the pub in the eighties with all these people telling me rap music was a flash in the pan and didn't really take any skilled musician to create it. They never really seemed to understand that was exactly the point, not that I necessarily agree you don't need skill to create good rap music, you most certainly do, but the fact that you don't have to play instruments or be able to sing to create this stuff and that it has such a visceral connection to a lot of people's daily lives… Well I just didn't understand why they didn't understand it was gonna be with us for a long time.
anyway, for my first choice for this genre I thought I would choose somebody a little unusual… So I went for a woman., you may have seen her as an actress in "Top Boy", if you've been paying attention to the rap scene at all in the last 5 years you will have heard her name… She is probably the most authentic voice of the current rapping generation (possibly apart from Kendrick Lamar) that you're gonna hear.
there is a side angle with this track, I don't often like African music, I think it should be really good when I hear some of the rhythms and some of the clever melodies on different tracks by different people… and then I find out when I give it a proper listen that I actually am just bored by it. However, this track incorporates an innate African feel but you can still somehow tell it's delivered by a girl from Islington.
The video was filmed in Nigeria, to be honest I think she used the whole exercise of filming it as an excuse to have a bit of a family holiday, but whatever. The bloke who features in this, Obongjayar, is a really interesting individual, growing up in Nigeria but now living and working in the UK. He's one of those truly diverse artists, Afro beat, spoken word, his work encompasses a lot of these elements and I don't really know how to describe it specifically other than to say that he's a kind of rapper… but not just that.
Anyway they work really well together. oh one last thing, "Point and Kill" isn't a gangster thing, it's a Nigerian saying that basically means "if you go for something hard enough you can get it"… Or something like that. It also means something to do with fish markets, but not in this case…
If you've got time also follow this track up with another track called "gorilla" which is more traditional rap, but brilliant, and very her.
Here it is: Little Simz with Point and Kill

I don’t think Debbie Harry’s rap can ever be topped by another woman…

African music is as massive as the continent it comes from and is good, bad or indifferent. Finding the good stuff is key. I'll play you some Tunisian Rai in my 2nd or 3rd week and talk about the delights of the Arab Orchestra for another.

That’s really, really good. I love the end of the vid…
I was massively into hip hop BITD, but always preferred lighter lyrics (so A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul etc.) with a smattering of NWA. Think I said recently I’ve got tickets to see De La Soul and the Pharcyde in Crystal Palace park this summer. I lost touch with the “current” scene years ago.
This is great and I’ll check out more of her stuff, starting with Gorilla.
One of our cats is Simi - a little black girl cat, named after the Greek island. She goes by a lot of other names, including (unsurprisingly) little Sims…. We’ve called her that since well before we heard of Little Simz…

Footnote to the above…
Gorilla is even better.
Love the brass and it samples the last part of Concrete Schoolyard by Jurassic5, which I might just put in my selection next time my week rolls around.

That Channers is keeping quiet. We need to make sure he shares some of his tunes here before the second round begins.

I like Gorilla, I've got it, but I've still been singing "Point & Kill" to myself in little snatches all day after re-watching that video! But this girl is seriously talented, I reckon she can make almost anything work and she sounds great. as my own little side note, studio engineering on her albums is fabulous… Put it on and you just melt into it… Especially with headphones but also with good stereo.

I do have my first week chosen, and a couple of other themes, though.
