Never been into LA. Only the airport en route to San Diego in about 1990, so can't help. You don't HAVE to turn right on red. Only if no-one is coming. It's quite a good idea actually. The overtaking on the inside is more stressful until you get used to it. Same exact thing for me. Flew to LA to go to San Diego. Driving in US is generally easy. Big roads, outside of the cities its quiet and pretty dull driving. Me and Brother in Law did a road trip from Florida to Talledega to watch Nascar. We got on the interstate and the sat nav told us the next step was to get off of it in 350 miles.

The Getty Museum and the Griffith Observatory are absolute must visits. I think the Getty is my favourite building- both space age with an Art Deco twist and as old as the hills it is part of. I could have spent two or three days there. We were based in Sherman Oaks last time ( not far from North Hollywood) and both are about 30 mins away .
As for ‘not walking around’ - My BiL lived in LA for 20 years ( mostly West Hollywood) and never had any problems- but there are areas you obviously don’t go and this can change street by street so get some info locally. We walked to local restaurants at night and I went for my usual exploring tours without any sign of trouble.
Local restaurants are generally good - we went to Upstairs at the Federal (steaks burgers fish etc that was better than average) and also went to Casa Vega that was featured in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- a lively bar and Mexican restaurant with really good food- but quite mild compared to our standard Mexican. We got to sit in the Pitt booth in the film.
Venice beach is a nicer version of Blackpool and everyone looks quite a lot fitter . The Venice bit back from the seafront is nice.
Santa Monica is a good day trip (about 45 minutes drive) Quite a classy area with good shopping and restaurants. And the pier of course- the end of the famous Route 66. We also went to the Dodgers (miss M jar was an instant fan) but left in the final innings with the Dodgers losing 3-6 to beat the traffic’. They won 7-6. Food and drink prices make Wembley look like Spoons. Eg £15.00 for a can of Coors! It is a good night out though and a must do.
Down the other end Laguna Beach is lovely ( I had a fishing trip from there booked and met the family after) We went to The Pageant of the Masters- an LA institution where great paintings- eg The night watch- are performed live on stage with actors gradually coming on to create the final picture. Set in an open air Amphitheater in an Art Village and very atmospheric. The area feels European and small town. Some proper pubs and nice restaurants. A good night out but a bit of a drive. (90 minutes)
Obviously have done the Chinese Theatre- Hollywood boulevard thing very crowded but nice places to relax one street back.
Finally Music lovers should head for Amoeba Music - a famous record shop on Hollywood Blvd. Home to the ‘What’s in my bag’ YouTube channel. Easy two hours spent in there.
PS another thing about LA is the constant smell of weed - shops are everywhere- and the numbers of homeless and car dwellers - far worse than here.

Worked/Lived in LA for 6 months . Laguna Beach is a MUST visit . Also drove to Vegas for a look . America could be described as a “Head”; The ears are the brains & characters , What’s in between is thick 🤣
