It’s Ms Y’s 17th birthday today but she’s nowhere to be seen as she went out yesterday and stayed at a mate’s house last night. I guess we have to get used to her having better things to do now than hang out with us. (Update: she’s just rocked up and doesn’t seem too hungover). This time 17 years ago I was having a marathon sleep after all my hard work being bored and then deeply traumatized bedside. We finished off Poor Things last night - it’s funny but really weird. I now feel like I’ve seen as much of Emma Stone’s tits as Barry Keoghan’s willy - and I know which I prefer! (It’s obviously the Irish sausage).
I took the day off work and woke up early so I’ve already done my Friday evening weights sesh and only just had breakfast. I’ve got a lot of music to catch up on as I finally picked up Bug Club’s most recent album when I was back at my Mum’s - and bought Adwaith’s two albums when we went to see them in Sotonia last week. Ms Y got a tee shirt signed by the band as an extra birthday present. She’ll be well gutted when she goes to Reading and finds that Lana won’t give her a personal audience afterwards like Bug Club and Adwaith have done recently. I’m also about two weeks behind on my vinyl calendar and haven’t started the music thread yet.
That reminds me…hey, Tone, are Buzzcocks worth seeing these days? They’re in Frankfurt next Friday with Modern English as support and I was quite tempted but won’t bother if the current Buzzcocks line-up isn’t the best. Tickets are €40 each so it’s not cheap but I’ve never seen them before. They’re doing Singles Going Steady for its 45th anniversary.
I hope Saints can turn it around against Blackburn tomorrow. I don’t like Blackburn given that they were the first modern era club to buy success off the back of signing all Saints’ best players. When Jack Walker died the club should have been buried with him IMHO. They’d better give us the 3 points in return tomorrow as they’d have been nothing without us. “Wilcox, you’re a c*n*!” would get an outing if I was going (and drinking heavily). It’s going to be scorchio here this weekend. That’s fine with me as I plan to do as little as possible before being in the office every day next week
Breakfast: large oats porridge, muesli, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, green stuff, mixed nuts with borage (shrugs) honey from Harrod’s and two slices of wholemeal toast with Harrod’s hot toddy marmalade. Socks: light grey Music: none currently but I intend to change that. Mrs Y has curated a 17th birthday play list. I don’t know what’s on it as the only one I can think of is Edge of Seventeen. Suggestions are welcome!

Moomins
Nice sunny day here, but the weekend is of course supposed to be wet and windy. It feels like it's been a very long week (albeit technically only 4 days), but that may be to do with working some of last weekend.. I fear I may have to some of this one too. Poopy pants.
Poor things wasn't on my radar, but I may reconsider.. this week post Handmaids we've been interspersing This Town, which is great if only for the soundtrack and The Gentlemen, which is silly
I've given up hope of Saints winning again this season, but will probably tune in tomorrow if only to see what mad selection the Wizard of Toss comes up with this time.
I need to sort out buying some new headphones for my phone so I can listen to the music fred (although B3nny's latest seems to be blocked); arguably more importantly I need to get a replacement dishwasher ordered as the volume of nagging about the broken one seems to be increasing.
Dull breakfast and socks here, Complete guide again on my way in.

Suggestions are welcome! I’m afraid I can’t advise on the current Buzzcocks, I haven’t seen them and I’m not interested in seeing them without Pete Shelley. But if it’s not too expensive you should go. I may going to see Theatre Of Hate next week, no idea what they’ll be like, but I’ve never seen them. I’m currently sat in a sofa in a barn conversion in Norfolk looking out over fields, and I’ll be going record shopping soon. Lovely.

I’m at the flat.
It’s a filthy mess - all my fault as I have neglected it massively and spend as little time in it as I can.
I found a cleaning company on the internet and they are here now - 2 guys and one girl - scrubbing everything. It’s the spiders I feel sorry for.
I’m hiding in the living room, trying to do some work, which is hard as the girl won’t stop talking (I’ve no idea what language) and the industrial hoover they are using sounds like a Harrier Jump Jet taking off whenever they fire it up.
No breakfast. I forgot to bring milk and I haven’t had a chance to pop to the shop, so I haven’t even had a coffee. Grey striped socks. Sounds - as above
I want this to end so I can admire my clean flat and then feck off back to 299 and the cats.

I took my son to visit college campuses last weekend at the University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Oberlin conservatory. He’s applying as a Jazz trombone major and has to decide by May 1. Oberlin appears to be in the clear lead in no small part because they had Sonny Rollins saxophone on the wall and informed him the students get to interact directly with him at least once a year. Would be like a college telling me I’d get to talk to Jimmy Page when I was 18. Not that he would be interacting with biochemistry students most likely, but you get the point.
The solar eclipse on Monday has complete totality (or whatever it is called) right at our house, which should be pretty awesome. Except it’s supposed to be cloudy and maybe rainy, which would suck.
Yesterday I woke up to find Elon has granted all Tesla vehicles one month of free full self driving, so I’ve been playing around with that. My car drove 20 miles to work this morning and I had to take over twice- once when I got passed by a couple of police vehicles with sirens blaring, and the cars in front of me pulled into the shoulder, but my Tesla obliviously kept on going, passing everyone. Slightly embarrassing. The more concerning one was where it was approaching a sharp right turn at close to 80mph with no clear indication it planned to slow down. Overall, it’s a pretty awesome experience, but not enough that I’d pay for it. And Elon still pisses me off.

Evening Scummers
Another week survived and a weekend looms ahead. Will find some football to watch around listening to Solent at 1500.
Good week for my fantasy team with both Foden (C) and Palmer getting hat-tricks. Back to the rubbish tomorrow no doubt.
Just time for last week's Bundesliga highlights before the Lionesses kick off.
Soon be Gin Time!

Evening. I've been on a 6.5-mile walk with friends today, starting with a coffee halfway up the Cain Hill Locks complex of 29 locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal, lunch at a pub alongside the canal just over 3 miles away, and then returning to where we started some five hours later. It was hardly rushing, but we were catching up with friends we haven't seen much of over the winter months. Which reminds me spot51 the REME Museum shop was selling REME-branded bottles of pink gin for £55. The bottles themselves were short and squat and looked very smart, but I don't drink gin. Instead, I contented myself with a tank pencil sharpener - it satisfied the inner child in me... Can't wait for the next episode of Shõgun next Tuesday, although I will have to wait until Wednesday to watch it as I will be at St.Mary's on Tuesday.

I'll make my way to that museum probably in September when I'll be in Dorset. Been to the RE Museum in Chatham and was allowed into their library. Could not find any records about my Granddad's WW1 (he was in an Indian Regiment*) but I tracked his WW2 career (inc building barges in the Sahara). One of the librarians found the memoirs of an officer who served with the *Bengal Sappers and Miner's in Mesopotamia which gave me where my GG had served before he returned (medical grounds) to India. He was then sent to train recruits at the Quetta School of Musketry up by the Himalayas and was still there at war's end in 1918. India was preparing to send over 500,000 fresh troops to the Western Front if required so Germany never had a chance with both them and the US getting involved.

I reported it to the previous landlord but he wasn’t interested and I don’t think the new one will be either if he needs to sell the house. At least the Croatian handyman confirmed my suspicion that it wasn’t repairable and we’d need a new one. I also need to order a new washing machine as the current one hasn’t been draining properly for ages. There’s lots of other things I’d rather spend money on and I can’t be bothered with the hassle either so I’ve just put up with it so far. There’s no point moving a broken washing machine to a new place though.

Buying the dishwasher isn't particularly hard, but I'm trying to see of I can get a discount through the work account and I need to ring the shop, but haven't had time in the last 6 weeks

I need to sort out buying some new headphones for my phone so I can listen to the music fred Can I recommend the new B & W PX7 S2E to you sir? I got some at Christmas (they were running a bit of a discount at time), but having had them for a while now I would thoroughly recommend them even at full price. If you can afford it,, the PX8 are even better.

Just dipping my toe, if I can manage a few months without losing them I might allow myself to upgrade. Tbh, they're mainly for spoken word, not music anyway (I've got a hifi & a car for music) & the reviews were better than the £100 Samsung own brand.

Having given them a try, they're surprisingly decent for £17 (the vat was knocked off) ...and you should always expect me to be cheap, being an accountant isn't just a job, it's a whole way of living!
