I know it won’t happen but a midfield of Downes/JWP/Smallbone would be brilliant.
I would love JWP back

Villa need to shed at least £60M worth of players to avoid FFP repercussions. There are any number of their squad I'd like to see here but a punt on Jhon Duran, Moussa Diaby or Leon Bailey would definitely improve our firepower. Thinking about it - Villa have played a very smart long game here. They came up in 2019 (via the play-offs) under Dean Smith and made a major overhaul of their squad. The next season they hit the magic mark (17th) and in 2021 finished 11th. Every season they invested heavily in the squad adding quality and depth so that last season they qualified for Europe. Next season they'll be in the ECL - and only need to flog a couple of squad players to stay within the rules... That looks like a template for promoted teams.

It is, but it has no margin of error, well ok a brief bit of Steven Gerrard error maybe. They've also got very fortunate in appointing Emery. Compare Villa with Forest - similar huge splurges in the first windows after promotion, very different results. As an aside, football's rules are absurd. Qualify for the riches of the Champions League, but they dont flow to you until after June 30, so you need to sell a player to meet FFP before then. How long before a club somewhere in the world becomes a staging post for buying a player for 50m before July and then selling him back to the selling club for 55m within the next 6 months?

This one's a keeper!
Not sure how much credence it has, but nice to see we're being linked with a keeper in the circumstances.

Which players could be leaving?
Newcastle need to plug a PSR shortfall by June 30, and, while first-team squad members including Wilson, Miguel Almiron, Sean Longstaff and even Kieran Trippier could depart, growing interest in Yankuba Minteh has increased the possibility of the exciting 19-year-old being sold instead, albeit somewhat reluctantly.
The Gambia international scored 11 goals and provided five assists while on loan at Feyenoord in 2023-24 and he has interest from Premier League clubs and across Europe. Suggestions of a £40m price tag appear extremely ambitious, but a sale for £20m-£30m would significantly aid Newcastle’s PSR position. Minteh sees his long-term future in the Premier League but is open to joining a continental club. Newcastle have no desire to sell either Isak or Guimaraes. Guimaraes has a £100m release clause, which is active until the end of June, but Newcastle’s plan is to retain all their key players. Reports in Spain claiming Newcastle would be willing to accept €80m or less from an overseas club for Guimaraes have been rebuffed by those inside St James’ Park. Elsewhere, Newcastle hope to offload Ryan Fraser. The player has agreed a deal with Southampton and there are just details to be finalised with Newcastle. Isaac Hayden is also available.

We signed the wrong winger. Minteh for £20 million would’ve been a great signing. He has everything to become the new Sadio Mane.

I think with THB's deal done for £20M, we need to get Downes in at what? £20M+? Then there are all the improved deals for the players we want to keep, like KWP. I wonder what our budget actually is?

Fraser was a decent squad player in the Champ but not really a PL level player. Maybe we're planning for our promotion campaign in 25/26?

He has at times produced reasonable figures at Bournemouth in the PL. He's not an exciting signing but is apparently free or near enough. I think his experience will be handy and he's obviously a popular part of the promotion squad so I don't mind him being around and making 20 minute contributions here and there.

Yeah and let's not forget we have a whole bunch of players coming back from loans and adding to the wage bill. Onuachu Alcaraz ABK Caleta-Car Perraud Lyanco Lis I've probably missed someone. As much as I suspect RM doesn't really want to keep any of them around, there's no guarantee we won't get stuck with some of them. No cash coming in for Stu, and likewise, Adams and McCarthy who I suspect will leave, means we really have to hope someone will buy at least some of those above. I guess we will look to sell Sulemana as well. Reckon we'll try to keep hold of everyone else. Although I did notice that Aribo was being linked with a Turkish club. Downes won't be cheap. THB was already 20mil. Unless we can shift a bunch of players I don't think theres as much money as I and others imagine there is. I see we're linked with another midfielder....Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane... Whoever that is. Tunisian apparently. Well, whatever, we will definitely need to sell or try to integrate some of those coming back. The GK situation is a bit scary. Even if we buy someone in. If we lose McCarthy then Joe Lumley is our only fit GK. So, unless we have someone in the U21s who is ready to step up, we will need buy two keepers. Or keep Lis and add one. Hard to get through the whole season with just two keepers, after all. OK, this post is too long. Don't you love transfer rumours?

Yeah, he's not going to set the PL alight, but he's a decent experienced squad addition and can fill in at LWB as well if we're playing 532, which I imagine we'll have to more than Russ would like... also squad harmony and momentum are going to be key (as our last promotion and Ipswich have shown) so keeping THB, him and hopefully Downes of the loans in the promotion squad should undoubtedly help that.
