My heart goes out to you Paddy. Like others, I've had endure a close friend and family member departing from this world. It's been nearly three years since I had to have my Frazzle put down. Still miss her tons!
I know many feel cats are 'vermin', but when you have cat (or dog) for so long, it becomes part of the family - and a friend, not a pet.
My two kids and I are about to apply a whole heap of pressure on Mrs SS to get a new cat after we get back from Florida in August. She's not keen on the idea, but I'm confident we can win her over!!

Every time we lost a dog I said "Never again, it always ends the same way, in tears". History tells I failed to keep strong each time and just fell in love again. However this time it may be different. We have been going out two or three times a week for meals. This has cost us around £250 a month and the truth is none of the meals are anywhere near as good as Mrs SP cooks. I have suggested we cut back on this and go away for breaks instead. So often we have been prevented from going where we wanted because pets were not allowed. We just could not be parted from our dogs. I know that is stupid but I suppose we loved them too much. However the last two have had a terrific life travelling all over Ireland, all over England, Scotland and Wales. Some hairy tales there. Incidentally opening the thread I said she was 17 and five months, she was in fact 18 and five months. Something like 126 years + in human terms.
