As a kid I was taken to see Kent play at Tonbridge by my grandfather and I grew up supporting them. The team with Cowdrey, Knott and Underwood was great to follow. He was also a great bowler for England. I remember his debut with Cowdrey, normally in the slips, standing at mid off to help him steady his nerves. He started with about 10 straight maidens.

I remember the name but never saw him play.
My first Test was v Australia at the Oval in 85 when Lillee'n'Thompson were firing the bullets. For a few years a former boss of mine was renting a house to one of the Smith brothers (Chris or Robin) and they always gave him a pair of tickets to the first day of the Lords Test every Summer. He flogged them to me & Drew.
Can't remember the exact games we saw but we were definitely there in 1990 when Goochie scored 333. You could sit pretty much where you liked in the morning session and we were sat on the roof of the Tavern and one of GG's 6s flew over our heads! Generally had to sit in your own seats when the members arrived in the afternoon. Last game we saw was the Saffers after Mandela took over and they could tour again. Think that was in 94.
The names Underwood and Cowdrey take me back to Sandown Grammar where one kid always had a radio in their desk and kept passing on the Test scores between lessons. Different time - different world.
RIP Derek.
