Let's face it, their best years were behind them. I'm not sure the world needed another REM album. However, much of their output- in particular the early IRS releases, were stone cold classics. This is a case in point:

Let's face it, their best years were behind them. I'm not sure the world needed another REM album. However, much of their output- in particular the early IRS releases, were stone cold classics. This is a case in point: I agree that their best years were behind them, but the last 2 albums were somewhat of a revival compared to the previous few; I guess in hindsight they were a swansong, and the band felt right to go out on a relative high. The fact remains that in my yoof I only had a few albums by (then) current mainstream artists, and REM featured heavily. Thankfully the last time I saw them (a couple of years ago) they were exceptional, so that's a nice memory to go out on. FOM is indeed a classic, as indeed is the track I was just listening to:
