www.hampshirelive.news/sport/football/football-news/jack-stephens-injury-southampton-hasenhuttl-5950086 Not an issue last season as he as our 4th choice CB but things are very different this year. Again, the club's bizarre transfer strategy gamble has backfired. We've sold our 1st choice CB to a club at a level or 2 above us but instead of re-investing the money we have banked a large proportion of this and purchased a 4th choice (at best) CB. Can anyone without the rose tinted testicles give any coherent defence (pun intended) of the signing of the Brazilian clown? We have a player a huge distance away from being a regular PL starter but he is now just an injury to Salisu or Bednarek from being just this. Is this a remanence of the ill-fated Reed/Krueger error where we thought we could buy players for £7m and sell them 2 years later to Liverpool for £50m? History has shown that what in fact happens is that 2 years later you have a player who is worthless in terms of transfer value and we have to pay more money just to get them off of the premises. It's all very well saying give him time, but we don't have time. We don't need a player who might be decent in 18 months time we needed one for this season. Yes, money is a an issue but we could have easily have had an experienced PL CB like Cahill signed and who would any sane Saints fan rather have on the bench this weekend. Him or Lynaco?

I know. It's frustrating just how often the club shoots itself in the foot. Still we can at least remain hopeful that one day we will be as well run as in the Pochettino and Koeman days?

I knew you'd pipe up after Lyanco's performance last night. Why not give him a bit of time? It was his first experience of English football and he was up against megabastard McBurnie, who'd clearly been given the remit to rough him up on his debut.. and to add to his woes he was next to Valery, who as we know can't defend for toffee.
It's both unfortunate and Saints' typical luck that Stephens should get injured just as he's starting to find a decent run of form, otherwise Lyanco would've been just sporadic cup appearances this season and by next might be ok if introduced carefully. Of course, he might not.. but we spent £15m+ on Hoedt and he turned out crap too, so a £5m gamble is less painful to swallow.
And as for Cahill, Palace with him in the team last season conceded almost as much as we did, so scarcely any sort of upgrade.

This season is all about staying up. The damage done in previous seasons put us in this position. Cahill played most of the season in the PL for Palace last year. We wouldn't need him to do that here. Just a few cup games and filling in in the PL in case of injuries. He cost £7m not 5m.

Stephens seamed to have sorted himself out at last and now will actually be missed. Would not have said that even a year ago.

Can we just put all this Cahill stuff to bed, we already have an old, past it centre back on the books in Olly Lancashire. We don't need another.

Cahill is nearly 36 years old. Sf73 used to ridicule Vestergard for being painfully slow. Cahill makes him look like lightening.

Leaving aside us not wanting Cahill anyway, there's no way we'd've even looked after he was ditched by Palace for demanding too high wages.

I see Romeu is being trained up as an emergency centre half..hmm! He's only about 6ft tall. I remember Bertrand doing a pretty good job there a few years ago. Hopefully won't need to go there

They couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Cahill is just one example but there were plenty of players out there who could have been of use this season and were in our price range. It's all very well buying a project when you have a strong squad and are not a relegation battling team. If you want to look at how 'shit' Cahill is, he's been the starting CB for B'mouth this season they have played 8 games, conceded just 6 goals and are top of the league. That certainly shows he's a bit better at playing against Championship clubs than Lyanco was against Sheff Utd.
