I know Mason Mount won the second penalty but I still don’t know what Southgate sees in him. He’s hardworking, sure, but a player of his ability wouldn’t be anywhere near getting in the French squad, for example. The same goes for Maguire - his main strength is in the air but he couldn’t quite put away a headed chance and got beaten in the air by the aged Giroud for the second. Rashford’s FK in JWP territory was decent but it’s difficult to get it over the wall and down again from there without curling it. He should be starting ahead of Kane from now on because he’s much more dynamic. It should be the last we see of Southgate - and hopefully Kane - in a World Cup. I mean Kane’s clearly a good player but he was still outperformed last night by a 36 YO Olivier Giroud. He’s scored over 50 goals for England but 20 of them have been penalties so that shows how reliant he is on those for his England tally. Giroud’s got the same number for France but I bet he’s got more from open play because the French are much more creative and stylish than England. That’s always England’s downfall. They can’t create enough chances from open play and (like Saints at the moment) have to rely on set pieces and penalty awards. Southgate started off making all the right noises about picking players based on form but soon reverted to selecting big club players even when they weren’t playing well for their clubs. He was always too defensive and they started off on the back foot last night but still went behind. I can’t wait to see the back of him. He’s a no mark manager. I agree with 90% of this. Funnily, having been a massive critic of Southgate, I now wonder if he should stay for the next Euros. Finally I’ve seen some progression. We were good in this tournament, playing with the intent that has been lacking throughout Southgate’s tenure. Sterling’s time must be up. Mount should not start. Philips should only be near the starting XI if Rice is injured. Maguire must be replaced - Tomori should play, for me. We must look beyond Kane, who is over-rated (but I’m not sure who’s ready to step up). 3 at the back must never be contemplated again. Rice, Foden, Saka and Bellingham make me think the future may be bright after all.
