New forum, so I'm going to start taking my reviewing seriously again, sorry to those not interested...
I like the Foo Fighters as a live act, but as an album band they often disappoint with a few great stand out tracks and then a bunch of fillers. Their first two albums are great, but since then they've gone a bit too pop for me (Although the acoustic live album Skin & Bones is a good listen) for the most part with only glimpses of their rock sound.
Wasting Light is more like the first two albums than any of their others. Maybe Dave Grohl's time with Them Crooked Vultures and guesting on Slash's solo album has reminded him what rock music is. The first track has a bit of a QOTSA vibe to it and the whole thing is less glossy and polished, more rock, more Foo Fighters of old. I think this album might upset some of the fans they picked up with songs like 'Long Road to Ruin' and 'Next Year', and could bring back some of the fans of those first two great albums (If the pop music in between hasn't done too much damage with these fans)

Forgot this was on its way, so will be trying to find an HMV that is still open on the way home!

this band has always disappointed me, they have the ability to be masterful and the will to never put into practice.
I'm glad you said most of their stuff is run-of-the-mill, I thought it was me, odd moments of brilliance means I never really bother listening to their stuff any more, you think this is worth a go?

Hmm, I quite like the Foo Fighters because Dave Grohl was in Scream, but B3na1i's review had put me off this one.
Thanks for the heads up.

I have always felt Dave Grohl is a good drummer, but not such a good front man. I loved QoSA when he was in them and also Them Crooked Vultures, but have always been left strangely dissatisfied by his own band. Odd.

Personally I think this is the best album they have released in years, since Colour and the Shape. I'm on my 3rd listen of the day, usually with a Foo's album I like the first 3 or 4 tracks and then it's pop fillers, this is a complete piece of work. It was recorded in Dave Grohl's garage and has that raw sound, produced buy Butch Vig.... I really recommend this highly. Them Crooked Vultures excited me in 2009, I think this album is better

He's a great live front man, plays well to the crowd, but it was great to see him sat behind the drums at Pompey guildhall with Them Crooked Vultures
