I’m watching BHA v Citeh this evening. Phil Foden is running at Brighton’s defence, he’s so little, nippy and skilful that no one can get anywhere near him but then he slips over and clips the Brighton player on the leg as he goes down (so there’s definite contact but only because the City player has fallen over and initiated it).
The antipodean ref gives a free kick just outside the box and it’s a clear and obvious error but there’s no intervention and Foden scores from the free kick. City go 2-0 up and we’re not even a third of the way through.
A few minutes later Foden adds a third and the game is over at 0-3 after half an hour. I’m a neutral and I’ve already lost interest in such a one-sided game so I’m going to watch another episode of Mr and Mrs Smith instead. Isn’t football supposed to be entertaining?
Why does VAR intervene in marginal offside decisions (like the one that went against Coventry at the weekend) but not when a ref gives an undeserved free kick just outside the box? The offside is not a clear and obvious error but the free kick is. One goal gets ruled out by the narrowest of margins and the other is only enabled by a poor refereeing decision that is allowed to stand.
Why don’t they just give it up? It’s such a waste of time. We are definitely better off without it.

Ajax last night. All he got was a yellow card.

I didn’t know THB played for Ajax.
That’s very similar to what he did to Praet.
He’s lucky the ref missed that one.
