what would you do with it?
I've got one through work that is useful at work but I never use it anywhere else... I guess it depends whether you like watching movies on the move and how much you mind paying for data downloads?

I'm always traveling, and presenting to clients/sponsors, I spend loads of time in hotel rooms so having something to properly view emails, send attachments etc, without having my lappy would be great. Feels like a step up from blackberry and means I would not have to travel, go to meetings with lappy anymore.. At least thats my thoughts.

I've got one and find it very useful. I mostly use it for googling stuff when I can't be arsed to get my laptop out, such as when I'm in bed or watching tele (or both).
I also use it for reading (Kindle), playing the odd mind-numbing game such as Football Manager when I am bored, browsing and posting on IBO, tweeting, reading magazines, reading newspapers, and just about anything which involves me absorbing information.
I've also moved completely over to Mac products nowadays, and I can't ever see myself going back to a PC. I have to use a PC from time to time for work, and it is horrible to use, incredibly annoying with all the fecking anti-virus software pop-ups and such like, and generally nowhere near as good as Mac. I'm surprised that more people haven't cottoned on to this because it really is the way to go. I'm sure there must be some arguments against, but for what I use computers for, the Mac gives me everything I need and delivers it in a far better way that PCs.

The iPad isn't much good for work stuff like word processing and spreadsheets but can do everything else that a laptop can do while being more convenient. You can surf the web, send emails, watch videos, listen to music, has thousands of apps, pay your bills online, etc, etc. Since getting one last Summer I think I have only turned my home laptop on a couple of times.

That's true but there are distinct limitations, don't think you can replace the laptop with Ipad because it really is only some kind of delivery device, it's not really any fun to create e-mails/presentations etc on it. That being said, it does mobile media very well (if you can handle the fact that web sites don't appear properly because of the Apple/flash issues) and you can present using it very neatly (if you buy the extra connection toys from Apple. E-mail is undoubtedly better than blackberry, although I have real trouble editing spreadsheets because our company is too cheap to get a version of Excel that allows this to happen easily... not the Ipad fault though. Chris will tell you all the wonders of it on the move, as his life is half mountainside peacefulness and half European business monstrosity... him and Channers... Apple luvvies the pair of them

All I want it for (If I do) is for work and what you mention, but I need to know its not just a toy. Can you work on it? Pages, Mail etc or if I was away from the office for a few days would my Blackberry be as good? Thanks

I took mine on my NZ trip.
With the abundance of free WiFi it was brilliant. Enabled me to keep in touch and even talk to people using Skype. Not only that, but it allowed me to research where we were going the following day and plan accordingly.
Travelling aside, I use it very day. My mother subscribes to the ToryGraph and I use her subscription to get their digital edition very day. So I usually sit having breakfast and reading the paper on my iPad. In fact I woke up at 3.30am for some reason, so I downloaded the Friday edition and had a quick flick through it before going back to bed.
Before I got it I had no clear idea what I would use it for. Now, I wouldn't be without it.

I know what you mean but it does depend on what you use it for at work, for me it's all about personal presentation (I have to see the documents and telephone book sized paper is just not for me) As for the other stuff, everything else specific for those tasks does all of those better but if you want one thing to do all of it adequately but not brilliantly then I suppose this is your device? I would never watch a film, listen to music, write an e-mail or do anything other than play relatively simplistic games with it because it's not capable of producing acceptable levels of stimulation for me at those things. on the move though it would be a good device for that kind of thing. also, data charges are pretty big, battery life is pretty small (if you are using the data bit)... depends on your business account I suppose?

Think you have to buy Pages as an app. I haven't got it on mine but have heard very good things about it. I have no problems with using the screen keyboard but you can buy a wireless 'proper' keyboard if you prefer.

I watch films/TV on it, but only using headphones. Then it is almost a better experience than TV. I have all the TV related apps, iPlayer, 4OD, ITVPlayer, etc. Also I am puzzled about the battery life thing. I usually get 3/4 days use out of one charge, but maybe you are talking about the 3G versions. Frankly I wouldn't bother with them. I have a 3 Network Mobile WiFi point for the few occasions when I can't get free WiFI (I refuse point blank to pay for it) and that is a brilliant bit of kit. You can use up to 5 devices simultaneously on it, although that obviously slows everything down.

there is a free "Dragon" app available as well which allows you to speak stuff to it which you can then edit the (inevitable) mistakes out of afterwards. It's pretty good considering I'd say depending on how complex your letter writing was it would be more than capable, although you might want to wait for the new Samsung one just to see whether there is going to be any competition in the near future
