there is a free "Dragon" app available as well which allows you to speak stuff to it which you can then edit the (inevitable) mistakes out of afterwards. It's pretty good considering I'd say depending on how complex your letter writing was it would be more than capable, although you might want to wait for the new Samsung one just to see whether there is going to be any competition in the near future ... And then, if it is, you might want to wait for the iPad3 due out this year ...

So, in a nutshell if I'm at home on my wifi going online, sending emails, playing games its cool, as a travel tool useful, anything more busninessy stick to the lappy?
I'm assuming (i'm old) data charges only apply when out and about or downloading movies etc? Pretty sure most of the time I use it, I will be on paid for wifi.

Ms StB got one for Xmas and uses it a lot in preference to her PC laptop. Although most business stuff still gets done on her or my imacs. I have a feeling that I may be getting one for my birthday so it's interesting to see what people use them for. I could see a Pad being almost a replacement for a laptop BUT (and there's always a but) is it possible to connect a camera, memory stick or HDD to one fairly easily?
I like Apple products and find them far less troublesome than the Evil Empire's stuff.

I've had mine for 18 months now and I have noticed a significant drop in battery life in the last couple of months. I'm not sure whether this is related to how I use it though; in that time frame, I have synched everything up between my mac and iPhone through iCloud, so this may be having an impact, I don't know.

I am all Apple and I do NOT have an iPad. I have a Macbook Air which does the business very nicely for travelling. It can do all the web, movie stuff and is great for pages, numbers and keynote (and word and powerpoint and excel). As far as I can see it has one disadvantage against the ipad: you have to open it up. Oh, and I carry a small 500GB hard drive with all my stuff on it that connects via USB although more and more goes onto iclould and dropbox. I have an iphone stuffed full of apps that I use a fair bit.

My boss told me this week that he has ordered me a new ipad. It's supposed to be because I will be able to carry it around easier than my laptop and it will be easier to send/receive emails and use in with my customers. I also suspect that the ability to see where I am might have had something to do with it although he is adamant I will not be tracked. Hmm.

Jesus, I forgot that they could be tracked. No wonder lots of companies are looking to move completely to iPads. I wonder who on here will be the first person to suffer an iPad sacking.
