Following mention of a 'traditional no. 9', etc. in an earlier thread, I was wondering what numbers held what significance in terms of the style of player that should wear them.
Ignore 1, 2 and 3 for full-backs and keeper, obviously.

7 right wing. Fast, nippy dribbler and good crosser with right foot 11 left wing. Same but with left foot. 5 Big strong centre half cutting out all the stuff into the box (Gabriel, McGrath ...)

7 was Paine and 11 Sydenham. Perfect examples. I'm talking back in the sixties when teams still played 2 3 5. 442 started to come in about the time I started to watch Saints.
8 and 10 were the inside forwards. Chivers was probably 8 and O'Brien (the Melia) 10. Good dribblers, running into the box and playing off and with the number 9 who stayed pretty central. Think Lambert to Sharp on Saturday. Lambert started as a centre forward and has become more of an inside forward in old parlance.
4 and 6 were half backs, linking play from the back two to the forwards and the wingers - probably today's wing backs Richardson and Fox. We had Walker in that role I think. Was Fisher number 4?
For me at the time, 5 was the pivotal role (centre half) playing out of the back and launching the attacks.
I'm probably talking bollocks but to me the numbers definitely indicated the position.

No 5 - a classy CB that can turn def into attack. No 6- the midfield informer No 7 - the play maker No 11 - is an out and out winger
