This is an interesting question. Friday night's game made me think Saints are a long way from ready. I know Reading aren't in the Prem yet but I'd put them in the same bracket as a lowly Prem side.
There's plenty of time to put it right if the money's there. Who would you be looking to buy though?

Sorry, you watched Friday's game and thought that we WEREN'T ready and that Reading ARE? Really? On what basis? That they had a goalkeeper that kept them in the game? There is no chance that they'd be able to convert 4 chances into 3 goals against a Premiership team and we've not offered defensive/midfield gifts like that for a wee while. There's a reason they're being linked with a LOT of players at the moment......

And that reason is mainly because their new owner is opening his wallet ;D

And has watched the games against Leeds, Brighton and us and knows how fortunate they've been to come away with 9 points and how much the squad needs strengthening.

(formations notwithstanding) Davis? RB CB CB Fox RM CM Spider Lala Lee Lambert
GK Hoof Cork RW CF
So 8 is the minimum if Frazer/Shteve/Punch/Jose can't step up to the plate (which they can't on current evidence)

It is also to be hoped that, even if we go up, at least one of the academy players (Shaw, Chambers, Stephens, Ward-Prowse) might be good enough to challenge for a first team spot by the end of the season, although if we were fighting relegation I accept that this would be unlikely.
Anyway, it's all ifs and buts, the question for now is whether we are ready to go and beat Peterborough tonight. If we're not, then we can forget about the PL.

You can't afford to do that in the Premiership. Lambert, Lallana and Chaplow were all guilty of missing chances whereas Roberts and ALF put theirs away. Federici was nowhere near Lallana's header from six yards out that flew over the bar and Lambert's header was too close to him. Saints were the better team and still lost by two clear goals. It highlighted that Saints aren't clinical enough. The only player I trust to score is SRL. Apart from him, Saints need a lot of chances per goal. Reading just needed one chance per goal and SKD never had a chance with any of them.

Reading needed us to feck up, something we've done very little of this season, and we did. End of story. They were poor in possession and allowed 19 shots on goal. On any other day we've won that game comfortably. That's football. There were individual errors as well but I've deliberately steered clear of that particular thread.

Thankfully, the fact that we create a lot of chances negates our inefficiency in a lot of games, but it won't be like that if we go up. We certainly have talent but need to up the %s both up front and at the back. I don't think Reading are all that but they took the few chances they created while Saints missed theirs. I'll watch Friday night's game back tonight. I think I'm ready.
Maybe that'll give me a different perspective as it's difficult to see the game unfold from four rows back. My most vivid memory is of the Reading bench celebrating their third goal...
On the plus side I did come within touching distance of Lee, Barnyard, Schneiderlin, Reeves etc. who all had a lot of trouble finding their seats. Footballers eh?

Interesting that just about all of the discussion is concerning which players would succeed in the prem, and which might not. My main concern is the manager, I honestly feel he has reached the limit of his ability thus far, and would probably struggle to cope with the egos of the players we would certainly need to bring in to cope in the upper echelon. I concede that living in Spain I do not have the first hand knowledge that some of you lot do, my feeling is based on the reports I have from those who attend regularly and the couple of matches I have been to myself, along with what I watch on Haha and the Saints web.
