Christ he was good.
Sometimes I forget just how good he really was. Rickie Lambert may very well be the most significant signing we've made since I've been following Saints, but while he is very, very good, he's no Matty.

I like the Blackburn one more than the Newcastle one because it was against Tim Flowers.
Mind you, the Newcastle one was against Branfoot so it's a close run thing.
I plumped for the Blackburn one in the end.

Matty has always maintained that Branfoot was an alright bloke, and he at least had the good grace to smile ruefully after the second goal against Newcastle. Matty also tells the story of how Flowers told him "You'll never score past me" as he was leaving The Dell to sign for Blackburn, which probably explains his reaction to that goal.
