I have just finished reading My Father & Other Working-Class Football Heroes by Gary Imlach. I have been meaning to read it for years and found it in a local 2nd hand book shop. It really is a tremendous read, probably the best football book I've read. I can also recommend My Favourite Year, again quite old now but if you stumble across it it's a good one. Any other recommendations for sports books in general, the new Eddie Mercx (sp) is meant to be good

Yep.
The Death of Marco Pantani - Matt Rendell - fantastic insight into the cult around Pantani, his personality, drugs in cycling etc.
Broken Dreams by Tom Bower - getting a bit old now but a great look at football corruption in the UK in the 80s and 90s.
There's some excellent books on the various "teams of their era" such as Ajax, AC Milan, Barca etc. some of which are more story and some very detailed technically. Most offer a good insight into the money, politics, drugs, corruption, ideals etc. that were rampant at the time. (Not so much the Barca ones.)
Oh, and the best recent one, Racing Through The Dark by David Millar. Again a very heady mix of cycling, drugs, rehabilitation etc. from a bloke who is impossibly clever and very, very cool. (Met him, top guy)

I have football against the enemy, started but not finished. I have quite a few as yet un read, the local 2nd hand bookshop is a handy source I think I may officially collect 2nd hand football books. Funnily enough the bloke who played up front for The Republic O' Ireland, but was English...Um went to France...can't remember his name but his Autobiography is a good read too.

Inverting The Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson. Compulsive reading for anyone with an interest in tactics.
Also:
Brilliant Orange- The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football by David Winner.
The Ball Is Round- A Global History of Football by David Goldblatt.

Re Football Against the Enemy...I loved the Herta Berlin fan that the Stasi had a chunky dossier on. He was only watching his team.

I read a good footie autobiography when I was a nipper in about 1963 or 4. By some English guy who went and played for Inter in the late fifties. Not that famous but it was an interesting read. There was a chapter entitled "the itailian football fan is a fanatic" or something. I don't remember his name but I enjoyed it. I think it's the only footie book I ever read.
