What's the correct English here?
I often see things like this... Pearl Jam is playing Southampton 20th Jan... That doesn't read right to me surely it should be Pearl Jam are playing...
I'm not just asking because I'm a fully signed up member of the grammar police (I'm not) I do have a reason for asking

It confuses me this bands are a collection of people, like football teams You wouldn't say 'we is going to the pub' or 'Southampton is playing M'Boro' so why is it 'is' for bands?

Surely either is fine? You could refer to the band as an entity ("is"), or collectively as Eddie Vedder and his hairy mates ("are").
