As Benny said you get the same result for whatever number you pick between 78 and 137. It doesn't have to be 100.
It's logic rather than maths.

Do you ever feel like you trample all over serious debate with pure, unbridled idiocy? I basically flounce around destroying adult discussion.

This definitely comes under Burls' "boring magic" umbrella... Ok- I set some maths problems yesterday. All HTU-TU. One of them was 137-78=59. After a while I realised that if you make find the difference of both 137 and 100 and 78 and 100 and add them together, you get 59- the same answer as when you subtract 78 from 137. I don't understand why though and it's making my head hurt trying to work it out! You are probably all terrified that I have to teach maths to kids now... Yeah, that is a worry.. Er, in steps I guess it goes a little like this, you have: 137 - 78 = 59 But cos it's addition/subtraction, you can split up the sum, so it's equally (excuse the pun) true that: 100 + 37 - 78 = 59 or that 100 - 78 + 37 = 59 What you've then done is split the sum out thusly (137 - 100) + (100 - 78) = 59 If you go back to (say) boxes of fruit principles, because you're just adding and taking away, it doesn't matter which box you're adding into or taking away from So this is also true: 100 - 78 = 59 - 37 has that helped, or have I made it worse*?! *it's always tricky to explain if you do "do" maths, as it just feels like a language rather than thinking about how it actually works.

No, no, you've explained it very well, thanks mate. I think I get it now. It is actually a brilliant way of doing it- I can do it much more quickly that way than the first way. Cheers Jezza.

No probs.. ..provided a welcome distraction from the bastard system screwing me and having to rebuild the sodding reports from scratch that were supposed to be ready this morning.. ..I might've just walked out otherwise!

Do you ever feel like you trample all over serious debate with pure, unbridled idiocy? I basically flounce around destroying adult discussion. ALL the time! Its kind of my thing. I like to act like Ralph Wiggum when people are talking about things that go over his head, entering the conversation with 'My cat's name is Mittens'. Ralph, bless him, the original Brick 'I ate a big red candle' Tamland. I hope people think that i'm not as dumb as i make out, but i'm not giving them a lot to prove otherwise.

I actively enjoy creating awkward situations. I'm best man at a wedding on Saturday and we had the rehearsal on Wednesday night. Throughout the wholething I was DESPERATE to sidle up to one of the bridesmaids and loudly say "Soooo.... some photos of my dick...".

I'm all about dicks today. I know we've done the "Who's got the biggest dick at SFC thing"... perhaps we could do "Who's got the biggest dick on each team of the Blacks XI versus Whites XI match"?

for the whites, Liam Ridgewell? He wouldn't get in the team. Unless it was on the basis of his cock size.

That's because there's nothing to work out! It's not a maths puzzle, you've just stubbled on something by chance Shirls, that means nothing... What's the significance of 100 to any of it??? No- if you try it with any HTU-TU problem it's the same. Exactly my point!
