Firstly, many thanks for all your kind words for my recent loss and sharing your thoughts regarding future dog ownership.
Because Scamp was not up to going on holiday ( she went everywhere with us) we never went away last year. So to give both of us something to disrtact us I decided to look for a cottage for a week to get us away. Online I stumbled on a cottage in a Dorset village with the grand name of Toller Porcorum. I recognised the latin ring to Portcorum so I decided to look it up and had to laugh.
Portcorum- of the pigs or Swines Toller or Great Toller.
My wife saves ornamental pigs, we have holidayed in The Piggery and now this. Must be a message somewhere?

Could of been worse Paddy. It might have been Shitterton, Droop or any one of the Piddles or Puddles. Although we do have the equally whimsical Ryme Intrinsica, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Fifehead Magdalen et al. Toller Porcorum is quite close to Eggardon Hill which has spectacular views on a fine day. Away from the touristy centres, Dorset has a lot to offer in terms of scenery, walks and places of interest. Have a good break in God's own county.

Most islanders know bugger all about Hampshire, Dorset and Sussex because when we get off the ferry we drive through them en-route for somewhere else. Having spent my working life in Hampshire and having friends in West Sussex I've discovered at least some of those counties but it took a couple of cottage holidays to discover Dorset.
First was in Wareham Forest and more recently we rented one in Cranbourne Chase. This latter one was in November in a year when there had been no autumn storms so all the trees still had their leaves on. Countryside was stunning. Nowadays tourism is an all year business and there is plenty to do in Dorset and Salisbury in the winter months - rents are dirt cheap too.

Have holidayed in Dorset previously and it is a nice county to visit. No self respecting Trade Unioist would fail to visit Tolpuddle. Will look out for Eggerton Hill, can't beat some local knowledge,

Many moons ago we lived on Portland for 18 months - we were Top Hill, not Underhill, folk. I've always had fond feelings for that part of Dorset ever since.
We used to view some of the place names as 1930's English actors' names. Winterbourne St Martin, Clifton Maybank, Lytchett Matravers.

This thread makes Dorset sound like some kind of prog rock hell.

Could be worse, someone could suggest you head further east and head up Pratts Bottom

Hi St.Baz. As you are a former resident of Portland do you still give anybody a good slap if they mention the "R" word?
