I just watched the trailer for Argylle on Apple TV (I keep wanting to spell it Argyle....), and it looks just what I am looking for. Although I may wait to watch it on Apple TV.
I love the cat.

Wholeheartedly recommend the first two Kingsman’s (first the best, second fun with a great turn from Julianne Moore). Also looking forward to Argylle. In the same vein I really enjoyed Bullet Train a couple of years back. Everyone hamming it up trying to be LockStock in Japanese.
Less action and violence…
Watched The Holdovers last week, thought it was great.

Don’t see the point of releasing it after Xmas.

My Walter Hill retrospective has been continuing apace.
48 Hours has not aged well. What might have been edgy and knowing back in 1982 comes across as lazy, racist and sexist (and unfunny) in 2024. The best bit is when Eddie Murthy’s character says “I’m always amazed by the generosity of women” when he finds out that Nick Nolte’s character is knobbing someone (never mind that it’s Annette O’Toole). They must have been having a right laugh with that casting because you only have to look at the best photo of Nick Nolte and the worst one of Annette O’Toole to know that no one who looks anything like Nick Nolte is ever getting within a dick’s length of someone who looks like Annette O’Toole.
Still. I had fun spotting the actors who were previously in the Warriors (and Mike from Breaking Bad back when he had nearly a full head of hair - before it gets blown off by the bad guy, who was one of the bad guys in the Warriors).
I going to watch Another 48 Hours tonight and see if that’s any less dated. Here’s hoping.
My favourite discovery so far has been Southern Comfort, which I’d never heard of before this week but is well worth a watch. Someone on IMDb says it’s Walter Hill’s best film and I’m inclined to agree. His films are interesting because they’re all set up like westerns, even when they’re not westerns.

I watched The Toll last night. Recorded it off C4 at the weekend as it looked interesting and relatively recent. It is another English language effort set in Wales with funding from S4C, BFI and the Lottery. Set in Pembrokeshire it is a bloodily violent tale of a former gangster tracked down by his former accomplices after 29 years. I don't normally like Comedy Thrillers but this worked really well. Well worth a watch.
Another thing I've discovered is the treasury of old documentaries on Moving Pictures. I always check their schedule to see what is on as I love old movies, partly because of their social history content. Cityscapes, fashions, vehicles and (non PC) language were all so different BITD. This week I saw 2 documentaries from the mid 60s which were captivating. The first was from the Baim Collection (on each week) and was 30m on the liner FRANCE crossing from Southampton to New York.
The second was "The London Nobody Knows" with James Mason taking you round old London before it disappeared for ever. Absolutely stunning piece of cinema and, in parts, a disturbing account of how people lived in our capital when I was a teenager. Absolutely do not miss this - if you can find it.

Yeah, we watched that a while back (as it had the lad off of Misfits and Titsndragons whose name I can't remember - or pronounce probably, but he's always a decent watch) and found it very enjoyable. I might rewatch Misfits some day, pretty much all the kids in that have gone on to "big things"

It appears most critics completely disagree with me on Argylle, its been panned by all but a few. Sniffy wasters, its fun, definitely flawed but fun.

I see they’ve remade Road House…It’s an outrage! Patrick Swayze must be spinning in his tiny little grave. It’s a shame he’s 5’ 6” under now as I thought he was a really good actor in his day. Maybe this will motivate me to rewatch the original as I haven’t seen it for ages and it’s (unintentionally? Who cares?) hilarious. #paindonthurt
Mr and Mrs Jones is supposed to be good though. I liked Donald Glover in Community and Atlanta has its moments. I’ll have to watch that with Mrs Y but she’s arsey with me because she told me about it ages ago and I turned my nose up at it until I read a glowing review in the Guardian and now she thinks I’m a misogynist (even though the record was by Lucy Mangan, who’s also a fluffy-headed chick).
I had a hour to kill earlier and watched this “erotic” German thing called Hotel Desire, which was on Prime and only about 40 minutes long. Soft porn has come on (ahem!) a long way since my day. It was much more graphic than I was expecting. I want to be a stunt cock when I grow up. I’ve had to knock online porn on the head (ouch!) as I’ve decided it’s unethical and unhealthy having all that in the palm of your hand (ooer missus!) so I’m going back to basics. Anyone got Emmanuelle 2 on VHS? Things have come (stop it!) full circle because I used to stay up late at weekends when I was a teen and watch soft porn classics on German satellite channels like RTL and SAT1. I don’t think they show them these days unfortunately so kids are really missing out. It can’t be good for their tiny little brains going straight to hardcore.
I preferred Another 48 Hrs to the original. Eddie Murphy is much more comfortable on screen and it’s telling that it’s produced by Eddie Murphy productions. It’s much less racist and sexist than the original and funnier too. I think I’m done with Walter Hill films now as Mrs Y is back tonight and won’t tolerate it.
I’ll be out tonight picking her up from the airport so I don’t think I’ll be watching anything tonight.
