Watched Dune Part 2 yesterday. Loved it. A lot to take in (I read the book nearly 30 years ago and it really helped at times), but these big 'unfilmable' projects, much like Lord of the Rings, are always going to leave some fans disappointed for not doing justice to the source material in some way. Given that undertaking, I think Villeneuve has done as good a job as anyone possibly could have done. It looks stunning and although there is a lot of plot and lore to get through it is never dull and rips along. Great to have a big, serious sci-fi that isn't full of wisecracks like the infinite comic book movies that come along every 5 minutes. And for it to have been a commercial hit as well bodes well for the future. Back in the day I tried starting the second book and hardly got anywhere with it, I understand that it is quite a departure in tone (and that the later books go completely off the rails, particularly after Herbert's son started writing them). I believe there are plans to film that now, I wonder how that will go but look forward to seeing it. Good to hear, I have read all 6 of the proper Dune books (first 3 great, 2nd 3 not quite so much as they do rather jump the shark) but not the other ones his son did and was a big fan of the original film. I found the part 1 of the new one a bit bland after the Lynch noir smorgasbord of the original (and Sting & agent Coop ffs), but still very entertaining so am looking forward to pt2 which hopefully will deliver a bit more on the story. I'm going to have to check my bookshelf, I'm sure I've got at least the first 3, if not all 6.

This thread bumping to the top has reminded me I haven't been to the cinema in ages - must sort that out. Although it wont be for Dune 2. I haven't seen Dune. Star Wars aside (which I'm a nut for) I don't really like Sci-Fi that much.

Star Wars aside (which I'm a nut for) I don't really like Sci-Fi that much. The series For All of Mankind on Apple TV. It is Sci fi rooted in current reality. It's the space race from 1st Moon landing (it was Russia) to colonies on Mars, with Nasa and Russia as frenemies. I'm not a Sci fi fantasy fan

Have we done a review of the new Ghostbusters? I'm off to my 3rd cinema visit in the last 15 years (Damned Utd, Top Gun Maverick) to see it tonight.

I haven’t seen the new Ghostbusters yet but it’s on my list.
I watched Killers of the Flower Moon this week and thought it was good, much better than The Irishman, which made me think that the old guys involved had all lost the plot.
It was also much better than Napoleon, which I also saw on Apple TV recently. Based on that, Ridley Scott should retire as I thought it was a right old mess. No wonder the French were pissed of with it.
It’s not a film but that new Fallout series on Prime is supposed to be good so I must check that out.

Finally after over two months since our last trip we went to the cinema last night. Life gets busy. I'm going to try to go again on Saturday to see either Civil War or Monkey Man but last night's trip was for the Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black. I'm a fan of her music. She had a unique sound at the time that was tinged with nostalgia - these days there are a million impersonators and other singers that try to sound the same, but 15 years ago she was unique and brilliant. That said I didn't know a lot about her at the time other than her music. Of course since she died I've found more about her and the documentary Amy was really interesting.
This dramatisation was OK. The performances were decent but I don't think anyone that knows anything is going to learn anything new. I don't think it focused enough on her career, more on how she jeopardised it and ultimately paid with her life. She was obviously surrounded by arseholes - and to be honest she wasn't the best person was she - but the film is pretty light on how it treats those arseholes. Her boyfriend/husband Blake comes off worst but even he doesn't come off as bad as you'd expect as he's kind of played for laughs. I guess they're trying to show why she fell for him but it sits a bit weird. Personally I felt it was more like a 3 part ITV or Channel 5 series but in the cinema.
5/10 (Mostly for the music and three of the central performances of Amy, Dad, Nan)

Reclining leather seats in cinemas are a game changer though.

Wicked Little Letters is bloody brilliant, but then Olivia Coleman is in it, so it would be!

Reclining leather seats in cinemas are a game changer though. Yep. They're brilliant in horror films... We had a spare one next to us when watching the 4th (I think) Insidious movie a few years ago. There was a really jumpy lad in the seat next to it (It wasn't a scary - or good - film at all) my mate decided he'd have some fun and press the buttons and the lad next to it jumped out of his skin when it started moving. Also, was great when I took my dad to see Napoleon last year, had a nice sleep (terrible film)

Can't say I am (or indeed any type of cinema of late*), but the chairs you describe seem to be a recipe for that manner of behaviour in the hands (?) of the yoof * maybe because we have leather recliners at home** **no, not for that*** ***generally speaking

Surely a leather surface is easier to sanitise than a fabric one?

Also, was great when I took my dad to see Napoleon last year, had a nice sleep (terrible film) I guess the answer is cost but given the amount of money cinemas spend on sound equipment it surprised me how little the actual picture quality has changed in 30 years and how bad it now seems. I went to a new cinema with the aforementioned leather seats and Dolby whatever sound but the picture was the same old projector stuff I remember from going to see Return on the Jedi as a kid. You could clearly see marks on the projection screen and the whole thing was just a poor quality fuzzy picture when we are now used to UHD on our own screens.
