for instance, I was thinking about Portsmouth going down and wondering whether there was anyone there worth considering?
I, and others, gave some examples earlier on another thread, but I'll write all the ones I can remember in here anyway, anybody else got names for the hat?
This does not mean they are all necessarily up to the job or would be interested in coming here, just that they might be, as opposed to writing down someone like "Nicholas Bendtnererererer" etc
Scott Dann - Blackburn Pedersen - Blackburn Paul Robinson - Blackburn Adrian Mariappa - Watford Fletcher - Wolves Jarvis - Wolves Kightly - Wolves Hennessy - Wolves Jacob Butterfield - Barnsley Stuart Holden - Bolton Adam Bogdan - Bolton

How about Junior Hoilett? I saw him linked with QPR if they manage to stay up. I don't know much about the Prem but from the clips I saw of him this season, he looks like he might have a bit of potential.

I didn't suggest him because I think he won't come here, I think he is probably going to go to a bigger team after the season he has had in a pretty poor team... not sure he would fit in either, he seems a bit like Punch to me? Skilful though

good list Shirley Don't really know much about Steven Caulker & I haven't been that impressed with Curtis Davies and Peter Whittingham this year (I also wish I had remembered J. Rodríguez, great player and maybe he will actually bloody come now?) Can you believe Noble has been given a hard time by some of their Wet Spam fans... ... he is all class. Is Tomkins a centre back, I thought he'd been playing midfield lately? Nathaniel thingy, any good? I've heard the name...is he that kid that plays for Palace as a right back?

I've never really been impressed with Whittingham either, just thought I'd throw it out there. Clyne is the Palace RB, yeah.

Well I definitely fancy the two defenders then, not sure we could afford to match Tomkins wages though could we? Nathaniel, good enough?

Clyne is so good we won't be getting a sniff. He's off to one of the "big" clubs. Manure are rumoured to have already done the deal.

I see... typical A lot of modern "defenders" can be brilliant going forward but not so brilliant defending... not poking holes here, I genuinely don't remember much about him from our game with them, can he?

That about covers it... he gave Foxy merry hell in the 1st half at Palace, but got beaten by Ricky for his goal (tbf Ricky is about 4 times the size of him).

The good thing is, I'm not convinced that there's anyone in our first choice XI who needs to be replaced as a matter of urgency. I think it's more a case of scouring the country/world for players who will a) improve the team/squad and b) have fit with the team ethos.
I do think we'll need to change the shape sooner or later, so another quality midfielder might be necessary if Puncheon's future lies away from St. Mary's.
I suppose in general though if you're trying to build a great team it's sensible to start at the back. If we could buy a young CB with the potential to be world class and a top notch attacking right back (I like Richardson a lot but his injury record worries me and memories of poor Danny Butterfield's ordeal against Nani in the Cup last year make me doubt if he'd be an adequate replacement against a top team) I'd be very optimistic.

I think the two key signings for next season should be a centre back and a quick right midfielder. As someone mentioned elsewhere, we would have sewn up the Chanpionship with a month to go if we still had Oxo. And we are thin on the ground at the back, especially as the jury is out on Jose's ability to adapt to the Prem.
I would also like a striker, a right back and a central midfielder, but the two above will be the most important signings.
